Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Tony Battie's aggressive play helped the Boston Celtics overcome a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit. It also nearly cost them the game. Paul Pierce hit a pair of key baskets in the second overtime after Battie's offensive goaltending nullified the potential game-winning score in regulation as the Celtics outlasted the Atlanta Hawks, 105-98. Pierce, who finished with 36 points, snapped a 96-96 tie with 3:26 left in the second overtime with a pull-up jumper from the left elbow. After Atlanta's Glenn Robinson missed a jumper, Pierce drove the lane for a lay-in and a 100-96 advantage. "Our defense finally got going in the fourth," Pierce said. "We got more active and rebounded and kept them off the break." Leading 102-98, Boston put it out of reach when Tony Delk drained a 3-pointer from the right baseline with 37 seconds left. It was Delk's short jumper with two-tenths of a second remaining in regulation that hit the rim and appeared to be falling into the net when Battie went over the cylinder for the slam. That prompted the goaltending call and sent the contest into overtime. "They (the officials) said they couldn't review it because they called the interference," said Boston's Antoine Walker, who notched his 12th career triple-double. "I thought it was a good call then." Robinson scored 25 points and 12 rebounds and Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 22 points for Atlanta, which was 1-for-8 from the field in the second overtime and missed 15-of-18 shots over the two extra periods. Robinson scored 19 points in the first half but was smothered in the second by Walter McCarty, who held his opponent to three baskets thereafter. "That's the ballgame right there, the way Robinson was going, he could have had 40 or 50 points," Pierce said. "I was just trying to make shots tough for him," McCarty said. Robinson's jumper with 5:25 left in the fourth quarter gave the Hawks an 89-78 lead and marked their last points in regulation. "To have the defensive stand in the last six or eight minutes in the fourth quarter was outstanding," Boston coach Jim O'Brien said. "(It was) outstanding, terrific half-court defense." "The game became very physical at that point, and you know, it's one of those things where you hate the result, but we've got to play through these," Atlanta coach Lon Krueger said. Boston roared back as Walker and Delk sank 3-pointers around a free throw by Pierce to cut the deficit to 89-85 with 4:13 to go. Battie nailed a 15-footer and hit two free throws, tying the game with 42 seconds remaining. "They made a run, and I guess we didn't execute down the stretch," said Abdur-Rahim. "We turned the ball over too many times. I think they got more aggressive at the end." Walker, who finished with 27 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, combined with Pierce on 23-of-64 shooting from the field. The rest of the club totaled 15-of-63 from the floor as the Celtics shot 35.5 percent overall. "I was struggling all night, but I just stayed with it the best I could," Walker said. Battie finished with a season-high 18 points and grabbed 12 boards.
