Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Eddie Jones missed a pair of 3-pointers in the final seconds as the Miami Heat squandered a late lead and fell to the Detroit Pistons for the second tiem in three days, 75-72. Jones led the Heat with 17 points but fired an airball on his first attempt to tie the game after a Miami timeout with 14 seconds left. Brian Grant came up with the loose ball and worked it back to Jones, but his attempt at a buzzer-beater hit the back iron. "I should have taken my time with it," Jones said. "I thought it was good." Corliss Williamson scored the final four points for Detroit, which made an 11-1 run in the final three minutes after trailing the entire second half. "It's like being in a fistfight and you have someone down and the match is over," said Grant, who had a season-high 16 rebounds. "You turn your head for one second and they catch you with an uppercut. We keep making the same mistakes. We made a lot of mistakes in the last two minutes." Some of those mistakes had to do with shot selection, as the Heat went just 3-of-16 from the floor in the fourth quarter and did not make a basket in the final 3:04. Miami led by as many as 10 points and had a nine-point advantage with 6:28 left. "It was great to see we didn't give up," Detroit center Clifford Robinson said. "We made plays down the stretch and got some stops tonight. There was a lot of production off the bench." Williamson scored 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting off the bench, while fellow reserve Jon Barry scored 12 on 5-of-7 shooting. Richard Hamilton led the Pistons with 17 points. After Williamson's layup with 1:02 left gave the Pistons the lead, the Heat had a chance to answer, but a planned play fell to pieces. Travis Best was supposed to drive the lane and kick the ball out to Jones, but instead let the ball get loose. Jones picked it up, then shuffled it back to Best, who missed his shot. Vladimir Stepania got the offensive rebound, but put up an awkward shot that fell short of the rim. "We got the rebound back and Vlade makes an absolute horrible decision," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We get the possession back and he makes a bad decision by trying to force up the shot. All he has to do is get it back out and make a play. Those are the kind of mistakes that all of us are making." Detroit's Ben Wallace grabbled one of his season-high 22 rebounds off Stepania's miss and on the next possession, Williamson iced the game. Wallace, who had a triple-double in Detroit's 79-68 win over Miami on Monday, scored eight points and grabbed a season-high 22 rebounds. Wallace has 62 rebounds in his last three games. After 10 blocks Wednesday, though, Wallace swatted just one Friday. "To put back-to-back games like he did is amazing," Detroit coach Rick Carlisle said. "I don't know if anyone has done that in a long time." The Heat have not won a conference home game in a long time. Miami has lost all four of its games against Eastern Conference rivals this season at American Airlines Arena after dropping its last two such games last season. The Heat played better than they did on Wednesday in Detroit, but to no avail. "We just couldn't hold on," Riley said. "It was a very disheartening loss. We played as hard as we could play for as long as we could play." After taking a four-point lead at the end of a see-saw first half, the Heat jumped to a 52-42 lead by scoring 10 of the first 14 points of the third quarter. But Miami did not make a basket in the final 4:13 of the period and let Detroit back in the game as the teams combined for just 26 points in the quarter. Miami has been held under 75 points in three of its last four games, losing all three.
