Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- For the second straight night, "The Truth" hurt the Atlanta Hawks. Paul Pierce had 31 points and 10 rebounds as the Boston Celtics completed a home-and-home sweep of the Hawks with a 109-99 victory. On Friday, Pierce torched Atlanta for 36 points and 14 rebounds, helping the Celtics overcome a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit in a 105-98 double-overtime victory. Pierce, who is nicknamed "The Truth," provided more bad news for the Hawks in this one, scoring 22 of his points after halftime when Boston took control of the game. "To get these two games was important for us," Pierce said. "In the last couple of back-to-backs, we lost by like 20 points." Antoine Walker added 22 points and Shammond Williams 19 for the Celtics, who never trailed and posted their fourth straight win over Atlanta. Glenn Robinson netted 24 points to lead Atlanta, which committed 25 turnovers that led to 24 points for Boston. Robinson had eight of the turnovers, often playing out of control. "It was just miscues. Everybody was not on the same page," Hawks point guard Jason Terry said. "Guys usually weren't where they normally are. It's certainly something we can correct." "The one stat that turned out to be the difference was turnovers," Boston coach Jim O'Brien said. "We kept our turnovers down, they had 25." Walker also said defense was key. "We were just very active with our hands," he added. "We get very scrappy. That's when we are at our best." A pair of foul shots by Shareef Abdur-Rahim had the Hawks within three points early in the fourth quarter, but the Celtics reeled off the next 10 points to seize control. Shammond Williams capped the burst with a short jumper that made it 91-78 with 7:37 remaining. Williams was 7-of-17 from the field, including three 3-pointers. He also did plenty of damage on the defensive end, coming up with six of the Celtics' 17 steals. "We just play our style of defense. If we do the things we need to do on defense, we will be all right," Williams said. Williams' big game came after he got the start in place of Tony Delk, who missed the contest due to family reasons. Starting alongside Williams in the backcourt, Pierce scored 12 points in the third quarter. He finished 9-of-22 from the field and was 11-of-12 at the line. "I'm happy with our effort tonight," Pierce said. "We felt like the team that was more mentally tough would win the ballgame." Eric Williams added 18 points for the Celtics, who shot 43 percent (37-of-86) and made just 8-of-28 shots from the arc. Terry finished with 23 points and Abdur-Rahim and Ira Newble each had 15 for Atlanta, which shot 39 percent (27-of-69) "I think they were aggressive, but some turnovers weren't even forced," Abdur-Rahim said. "We just did a bad job handling the ball. It was a lack of focus and concentration."
