Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- With no problems playing at home, the New Orleans Hornets used the Cleveland Cavaliers as a temporary remedy for their struggles on the road. Baron Davis scored 13 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter as the Hornets handed the Cavaliers their 10th straight loss, 97-84. The All-Star point guard, who finished strongly after sitting out the third quarter with back spasms, hit 7-of-14 shots from the field and dished out five assists. "I wanted to give him as much rest as I could," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "I wasn't going to play him at all, but he wanted to play. I thought he came out and did an excellent job in the fourth quarter." "Wins like this are very important against teams with bad records because it's going to pay dividends at the end of the season," Davis added. "It's especially good for us because we hardly ever win here. There's hardly any energy out there." The Hornets have won five in a row overall but just four of their last 21 games in Cleveland. New Orleans took a nine-point lead into the final period and Davis hit two 3-pointers in the first four minutes to extend its advantage to 82-69. "You look at them (the Cavaliers) and you think you can turn it on anytime," Silas said. "We picked it up and made a run and won it." "We got mauled on the glass and when that happens you are not going to beat anybody," Cavs coach John Lucas said. P.J. Brown pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the Hornets, who won the battle on the glass, 50-35. David Wesley paced the Hornets with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting and drilled a three-pointer with 30 seconds to go before halftime that put them ahead for good, 47-45. "Cleveland is just a tough place to come play," Wesley said. "We needed it." Jamal Mashburn chipped in 16 points to go with seven rebounds and six assists for the Hornets, who are 8-0 at home and improved to 2-3 on the road. Ricky Davis scored 24 points on 10-of-20 shooting and rookie Carlos Boozer chipped in 15 points and 10 rebounds for Cleveland. The Cavs were without starters Tyrone Hill (flu), Darius Miles (knee) and Jumaine Jones, a late scratch, and lost their fourth consecutive home game.
