Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- The Milwaukee Bucks' backcourt survived without Ray Allen, but their frontcourt struggled mightily. A night after Allen suffered a sprained right ankle, the Bucks got minimal contributions from their big men in an 86-81 loss to the Phoenix Suns. Milwaukee fought its way through the first half, leading by as many as three points before going to the locker room with a 47-47 tie. But the Bucks scored a season-low 10 points in the third quarter and never led after halftime. "It's tough to win that way when you're shorthanded and on the road," Bucks coach George Karl said. "Defensively, you don't complain, but the third quarter kind of sapped our cofidence." Milwaukee's guards played well enough to keep the Bucks within nine points. Sam Cassell scored 22 points, while Allen's replacement, Michael Redd, had 21 and tied a career high with 11 rebounds. "It's tough," Redd said. "We came out and we fought tonight. We were undermanned. The second team kept fighting while the other guys were out, so it's up to our bench now to step up. It's tough, but that's what we get paid for. We've got to play basketball and fight. To our credit, we hung in there as long as we could and made it close throughout the game but just couldn't finish it." Bucks forward Tim Thomas scored six points before leaving with a sore back in the third quarter and Jason Caffey had just four. Rookie center Dan Gadzuric was scoreless in 24 minutes. "We've got to get more from our bigs," Cassell said. "It's not a good sign. We ask our bigs to do a lot. Our season is in their hands. They've got to understand that." Shawn Marion recorded his sixth double-double of the season, leading the Suns with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Rookie Amare Stoudemire chipped in his first NBA double-double with 15 and 13 and Stephon Marbury added 11 points and 12 assists. "Amare played great tonight," Marbury said. "He's a big presence when he's in the game." Milwaukee got as close as 65-62 with 8:25 to go in the fourth quarter, but Phoenix scored five straight points as Marbury hit a jumper and Marion followed with a 3-pointer. Phoenix snapped a three-game losing streak and climbed back to .500 at 6-6. The Suns are 5-2 at home, where they have won 21 of the last 23 meetings with Milwaukee. "We didn't want to get too many losses on the record," Stoudemire said. "So we came out with a lot of intensity and tried to get the victory tonight." Rookie Marcus Hailsip scored a season-high 10 points in 19 minutes off the bench for the Bucks, who have not won in Phoenix since 1987.
