Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Clippers are not going to end their woes against the Utah Jazz by making crucial errors. Matt Harpring scored five of his career-high 30 points in the final 42 seconds as the surging Jazz extended their winning streak over the Clippers to 15 games with a 99-94 victory. Los Angeles has not beaten Utah since March 27, 1999, losing eight straight home games in the series. The Clippers seemed to be on the verge of victory before the Jazz rallied by taking advantage of costly mistakes. Los Angeles had a 90-84 lead with 3:39 remaining but managed just four points thereafter. Andre Miller was called for a lane violation that negated a free throw with 70 seconds left and committed an offensive foul 15 seconds later. "Free throws, turnovers," Miller said. "That was about it really. We had the talent, we had effort and we just didn't pull it off." It was only two in a series of mistakes for the Clippers, who missed seven free throws in the final eight minutes. "This is another one of those games when we play well But we can't seem to close it out," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "When we step up to the free-throw line, we've got to make free throws. We can't turn the ball over down the stretch, either. We just didn't make the plays we needed to make to get us over the hump." Harpring gave the Jazz the lead for good at 94-92 on a layup with 42 seconds left. He added a pair of free throws with 15.5 seconds to go and stepped to the line again with 6.4 seconds remaining. The fifth-year forward made his first attempt and missed the second, but Los Angeles center Sean Rooks bobbled the rebound and lost it out of bounds. Utah's Scott Padgett sealed the victory with a pair of free throws at seven seconds. "We just didn't panic," Utah point guard John Stockton said. "We executed and made some free throws and we were able to get the lead. Once we had the lead they had to foul us a little bit and we were able to stretch it out." Harpring made 12-of-19 shots, including 3-of-5 3-pointers. "I just felt good," said Harpring, who scored 19 points in the third quarter. "It's just one of those things I was getting open shots and it got to the point where you want the ball every time down because you don't think you can miss." Karl Malone had 17 points and 13 rebounds and Calbert Cheaney added 12 points for the Jazz, who have won five in a row. "I think we're getting there," Stockton said. "There are a lot of new guys and I think we're learning and I think we're getting a little bit better every day." Miller scored 21 points and Elton Brand added 19, 11 rebounds and six blocks for Los Angeles, which fell to 2-6 at home. Eric Piatkowski had 17 points and rookie Marco Jaric 14 as the Clippers had six players in double figures but made just 5-of-19 3-pointers and 21-of-32 free throws. Los Angeles scored six consecutive points to take a 90-84 lead with 3:39 remaining. But Padgett sank two free throws to spark a 13-4 game-ending run for Utah. Stockton had a layup and, after Malone made a jumper and two free throws to forge a 92-92 tie, assisted on Harpring's go-ahead reverse layup.
