Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Even on their home court, the Detroit Pistons found the Dallas Mavericks to be just as every other team has found them - unbeatable. Michael Finley scored a career-high 42 points in slightly more than three quarters as the unbeaten Mavericks rolled to their 14th straight win, a 102-82 rout of the Pistons. The best game of Finley's nine-year career moved the Mavericks within one of the NBA record for wins to start the season, set by the 1948-49 Washington Capitols and tied by the 1993-94 Houston Rockets. Dallas visits Indiana on Thursday. "It means we're on a pretty good streak right now," Finley said. "We're playing pretty good ball, not only against non-playoff teams but playoff teams as well. We're doing it in a consistent way, so it shows the growth of this team from one year to the next. Hopefully, we can keep it going." "They play together and they believe in each other," Pistons forward Cliff Robinson said. "When they play as a team, it is really tough to beat them." The season's second matchup of the NBA's best offensive and defensive teams again was no contest. On November 9 in Dallas, the Mavs led by 52 points before cruising to a 114-75 victory. The Pistons had won six of seven games but again were shellacked by the Mavs, this time on their home court. They fell behind in the second quarter and fell apart in the third before trailing by 31 points in the final period. "This was a disappointing effort, but that is a great team," Pistons coach Rick Carlisle said. "I wish we could've played better for our fans, but at least they got to see a great Dallas team. They were spectacular tonight, just like when we played them down there. This was a great opportunity for us to knock off a great team, but we didn't come close." Dirk Nowitzki ignored an Achilles strain to collect 22 points and 15 rebounds for Dallas, which is winning its games by an average of more than 15 points. "We seem to play well against them defensively and offensively," Nowitzki said. "We were pretty much getting whatever we want. We walked right in with the pick-and-roll." Finley was phenomenal, making 13-of-28 shots and 15-of-17 free throws in his first career 40-point game. He also pulled down 10 rebounds. "I just had good looks at the basket," Finley said. "My teammates were finding me in good rhythm and then I got into a comfortable rhythm and there was nothing they could really do defensively to take me out of that." The Pistons hung around for a quarter, trailing, 28-26 ,despite 11 ponts from Finley. But there was no stopping him in the second quarter, when he scored 19 points, most of them against Jon Barry. "He was incredible," Dallas guard Steve Nash said. "He really carried us in the first half when it was a closer game." "Look at his shot - he took 22 shots in the first half," Barry said. "They are a very smart team. They got him the ball. We just didn't defend him well enough." Dallas took a 57-45 lead into halftime, and Nowitzki scored six points in a 13-4 run that opened the third quarter and widened the advantage to 70-49 with 7:14 remaining. Finley scored six points in the period, which ended with Dallas holding an 86-56 lead. He added six early in the final quarter, including a pair of free throws that gave the Mavs their largest lead at 92-61 with 9:04 to go. He sat down for good less than a minute later. "Mike got us going offensively," Nowitzki said. "He was in a zone and he carried us through the whole game, pretty much." Eduardo Najera and fellow reserve Avery Johnson scored eight points each for the Mavs, who shot 43 percent (37-of-86), held a 51-43 rebounding edge and committed just nine turnovers. "When you're going against a top team like Detroit, you have to do the little things," Finley said. Richard Hamilton scored 19 points and Ben Wallace pulled down a season-high 24 rebounds for the Pistons, who shot under 40 percent (32-of-81). "When things haven't been going well, we started to splinter," Robinson said. "We can learn a few things from that team. When they have adversity, they pull together and play as a team. We splinter and start playing as individuals."
