Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Richard Jefferson and Jason Kidd each missed badly on 3-point attempts in the final 20 seconds as the New Jersey Nets fell to the Phoenix Suns, 82-75. After Kidd made a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left to bring the Nets within 77-75, he stole Bo Outlaw's inbounds pass and passed to Jefferson, who fired an ill-advised attempt from behind the arc. "You want to score," said Jefferson, who collected a career-high 10 rebounds. "I thought it was a good look. I'd probably shoot it again and hopefully have a better result." Penny Hardaway, who finished with 15 points and nine rebounds, was fouled and made both free throws to give Phoenix a four-point lead. When New Jersey came back down the floor, Kidd tried a 3-pointer that sailed well right. "I had a great look at a three," said Kidd, who led the Nets with 17 points. "I can't complain about the looks. They just didn't go in for me tonight." Shots did not fall for anyone on the Nets. New Jersey shot 29.5 percent (26-of-88) from the field, tying the record low at America West Arena. The Nets have not won in Phoenix since 1993. "Missed shots," Jefferson said. "There's going to be days like this. It's not like we weren't getting good looks." The Suns led most of the way, but the Nets took a 70-69 lead with just over four minutes left as a jump shot by Kerry Kittles capped a 9-0 run. Scott Williams put the Suns ahead to stay at 75-73 on a shot from directly under the basket with just over a minute to go and former Net Stephon Marbury hit a fading jumper from the left elbow to make it 77-73 and set up the final sequence. "I don't think I've shot the ball 19 times in my entire career, so I'll ice the elbow down later this evening," said Williams, who shot 8-of-19. "It definitely changed (Nets coach) Byron Scott's philosophy on how he was going to play." All five starters scored in double figures, carrying the Suns in a game when their bench picked up only four points. Shawn Marion led three Suns with double-doubles, posting 22 points and 10 rebounds. Rookie Amare Stoudemire collected 13 and 11, while Williams had 16 and 14, both of which represented season highs. Marbury and Hardaway were an assist and a rebound away, respectively, from posting double-doubles. At 10-5, New Jersey fell into third place in the Atlantic Division behind Philadelphia (12-4) and Boston (11-5). The defending Eastern Conference champions stand sixth in the conference. Kenyon Martin had 13 points and 12 rebounds for New Jersey, which started a five-game road trip against Pacific Division foes. Phoenix plays four of its next five games at home, where it is 6-2. The Suns grabbed a season-high 57 rebounds and outscored the Nets 38-28 in the paint despite missing center Jake Tsakalidis, who went on the injured list with a bulging disk in his lower back.
