Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Paul Pierce scored 30 points to lead the Boston Celtics to their fourth consecutive victory, a 92-82 triumph over the Chicago Bulls. Pierce outscored Chicago's entire starting five, which combined for 25 points. Donyell Marshall led the Bulls with 19 points off the bench, while fellow reserve Eddie Robinson added 13. Young forwards Tyson Chandler and Eddy Curry combined for just four points in 22 minutes, punctuating the Bulls' struggles. "Every game is a little different, but every game should be a learning experience and after a period of time, you have to learn," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "We cannot continue to make the same mistakes that we rehearse every day. Some things I view as growth and some things I view as just silliness and when that happens, you've got to get people out and make a change." Cartwright said that he was considering changing the starting lineup for their next game, Saturday's clash with the undefeated Mavericks in Dallas. Pierce scored 11 points in the third quarter as the Celtics turned a 50-43 halftime lead into an 80-64 advantage. "I'm just settling down a little bit, taking my time," said Pierce, who has scored at least 30 points in each of the last three games. "I think from watching my past games, I've been rushing it instead of letting the game come to me." Boston's Antoine Walker started slowly, shooting 0-of-8 in the first half. But he netted 10 of his 13 points in the third period, when Boston led by as many as 20 points. "I missed some shots," Walker said. "I had fairly good looks but we were playing good basketball. That's the main thing." Tony Delk helped get the Celtics off to a hot start with nine points in the first quarter and finished with 20. The Celtics hit their first six shots to take a 14-4 lead and led by as much as 24-10. The Bulls clawed back within a point in the second quarter before the Celts went on a 13-7 spurt to end the first half. "It was a great start," Delk said. "We didn't miss early on. I think it was just making the extra pass. Our defense was playing well in the beginning. We got in a few lulls throughout the game but we played good defense and passed the ball well. That's when we play the most effective." Tony Battie scored eight points in the first quarter and finished with 16. He also pulled down nine rebounds. Since a 99-96 win at Boston on opening night, Chicago has lost nine straight road games. If the Bulls do shift their lineup, Robinson believes that he could see some more playing time. "I think I've pretty much figured it out," Robinson said. "Once I come in the game and be active, play defense and hit my open shots and rebound, I think I have a better chance of staying out there." Curry, who turns 20 next week, admitted to feeling pressure at the start of games. "We've got the first two, three minutes of the game and depending on how we're playing could (determine) our whole night," Curry said. "You've got to perform in two minutes." The Bulls have not played a home game since November 16 and will not play again in Chicago until next Thursday.
