Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady was wincing, but he put a hurting on the Los Angeles Lakers. Overcoming back spasms that caused him to miss the previous game, McGrady had 38 points, a season-high nine assists and six rebounds as the Orlando Magic snapped a seven-game losing streak against the Lakers with a 112-102 triumph. "Tracy was great," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "He was a problem we had a problem solving." Mike Miller added 20 points and Darrell Armstrong 14 as the Magic beat the Lakers for the first time since February 22, 1998. Matched up against McGrady, Kobe Bryant scored 38 points and former Magic center Shaquille O'Neal added a season-high 28 for the Lakers, who dropped their seventh straight road contest. Their only "road" victory in nine attempts came against Staples Center co-tenant the Los Angeles Clippers on November 1. "It wasn't special at all," the 24-year-old Bryant said of going head-to-head against the 23-year-old McGrady. "I was just trying to battle and keep my team competitive. It had nothing to do with us battling, it had everything to do with us trying to win the game. That's the reason I played the game." "It was a great matchup," McGrady said. "He's going to get his, I'm going to get mine, that's just the way it is. Two great competitors going at it head to head. I was trying to get my teammates involved and not try to get caught up in a 1-on-1 with Kobe Bryant." Los Angeles fell to 5-11. En route to their third straight NBA championship last season, the Lakers did not suffer their 11th loss until January 23. "We're playing with no fire and enthusiasm," O'Neal said. "We're playing like we did when (current Dallas Mavericks assistant) Del Harris was coach." Orlando took the lead for good, 8-6, on a jumper by Pat Garrity 2:36 into the contest. The Magic led 31-21 after one quarter and 53-50 at the half. The Lakers got within one point on two occasions in the third quarter, but the Magic extended their advantage to 81-73 entering the fourth quarter, and Los Angeles got no closer than six points in the final 12 minutes. "The game plan going in was that I told T-Mac, 'You guard Kobe and you get no help,'" Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "I told Shawn Kemp, 'You're guarding Shaq and you're getting no help.' I said if they score 40 but we stop the other guys, we have a chance of winning the game, and I thought we did a pretty good job." "I thought it was a very good game tonight," Jackson said. "I thought the game carried a lot of good elements in it. ... We turned the ball over too often in the third quarter, and that led to too many opportunities." Los Angeles outshot Orlando, 49 percent (40-of-82) to 46 percent (37-of-81), but the Magic made five more 3-pointers and 11 more free throws. Paced by O'Neal, who was playing his fourth game since offseason surgery on an arthritic toe, the Lakers outscored the Magic in the paint, 44-24. But Los Angeles once again showed its lack of depth, managing just seven bench points - all by Brian Shaw - to Orlando's 24. "Guys stepped up and gave us energy and quality minutes off the bench, doing whatever it took," McGrady said. "I'm not too happy with the way guys are coming off the bench," Bryant said. "Their heads aren't in the game. That can be much better. ... I understand some guys are hurt, but they're not hurting any more than I am. I'm out there playing my butt off every night. I play every minute like it's my last. The young guys coming off the bench have to play that way." Nursing a sore left ankle, Grant Hill had nine points and a season-high 10 rebounds in 26 minutes for Orlando. He did not play in the fourth quarter. "When he came out in the third quarter, he said he was OK," Rivers said. "I thought he was favoring his foot and I just decided I wasn't going to play him anymore. That was just it."
