Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Not even a persistent fire alarm could distract the Dallas Mavericks from beating the Chicago Bulls for the 10th straight time. Steve Nash had 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists and Nick Van Exel added 17 points and seven assists in his first action in three weeks as the Mavericks led from beginning to end in a 103-90 triumph over the Bulls. "This game ended up being closer than I anticipated," Mavs coach Don Nelson said. "There were some good things that happened. We kept our minutes down. That was the main thing. We got a chance to see Van Exel, and he looked good." With 1:10 to play in the second quarter, a fire alarm at the American Airlines Center went off, prompting many fans to leave the arena. A fire marshal subsequently went on the public address system to announce the building was safe and urged fans to return to their seats after a seven-minute delay. "We got a little bit sluggish (after the delay)," Van Exel said. "But we maintained." Dallas led 31-21 after one quarter and 57-46 at halftime. The Mavs, who also led throughout a 114-87 triumph at Chicago on November 8, saw their advantage sliced to 73-68 after a 3-pointer by Jalen Rose capped a 10-0 run with 1:41 to play in the third quarter. But Dallas scored the next 11 points into the fourth quarter and the Bulls never threatened thereafter. "We got out to good leads and were able to maintain," said Michael Finley, who scored 13 points. "We didn't play as well as we did in Chicago, but we had a good enough lead where we were able to slack off a little bit for a couple of minutes. You can do that when you have a lead." "This is a hard team for anybody to match up with," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "They've got good shooters, they play early, they've got smart players. When you've got guys who put the ball in the basket, it solves a lot of problems." Dirk Nowitzki contributed 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Mavs, who bounced back from their first loss of the season, Thursday's 12-point defeat at Indiana. Van Exel, who played 29 minutes, had been on the injured list since November 12 with torn cartilage in his right knee. He was joined in the lineup by Raef LaFrentz, who scored five points in 15 minutes after a three-week stint on the IL with a right ankle sprain. "I didn't have any pain in my knee, so I felt good out there," Van Exel said. "It was definitely good to get back out there with the fellows. I felt pretty comfortable as far as going into the game. I wasn't nervous at all. I felt pretty good out there. That was the best I've felt in a long time." "Raef still has some swelling and it is going to be longer for Raef than Van Exel," Nelson said. "I don't know why, but it will be a few weeks before he is back in playing shape." Jalen Rose scored 31 points and Donyell Marshall had 20 for the Bulls, who completed an 0-6 road trip. They have lost eight of their last nine games. "I think we did pretty good," Rose said. "Dallas is the best team in the league right now. They just had too much firepower tonight, especially on the home court. Once we found a way to get a basket, they would get it to one of their hot hands. They have a lot of guys that can get it to the basket and they make you match up with that." Dallas, which has not lost to Chicago since December 29, 1997, shot 50 percent (41-of-82) from the field and limited the Bulls to 39 percent (34-of-88). "I was pleased with our effort," said Cartwright, whose team committed 19 turnovers. "I thought that we played hard. What hurt us was our turnovers. Some of them were silly, just carelessness with the basketball that costs us at a real point at a time where I thought we were really rolling.
