Game StoryMIAMI (Ticker) -- Rookie Dajuan Wagner had his second straight impressive game with 28 points, but he could not prevent the Cleveland Cavaliers from suffering a 14th consecutive loss, 85-79 to the Miami Heat. A showdown of the worst teams in the Eastern Conference featured two of the NBA's most promising rookies in Wagner and Miami's Caron Butler. Wagner came within a point of matching his season high and Butler led the Heat with 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting. "We're real cool," Butler said of his relationship with Wagner. "We've got a real good relationship. We bumped into each other during AAU and we've just been cool ever since." Wagner shot 8-of-19, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, while Butler had a solid all-around game with a season-high 10 rebounds and three assists. "I though tonight that (Butler) concentrated and focused on getting into it," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "He had energy and made some spectacular plays and gave us a big lift." Butler's layup with 45 seconds left iced the game and put Miami up, 83-76. The Heat won for just the fourth time in 16 games this season. "We needed a win," Miami forward Brian Grant said. "It was good to see ourselves get in position to win a game and then to win it. It's good to protect the lead. We haven't been able to do that lately. ... It's got to start somewhere. It might as well start with this game." The Cavaliers are closing in on the team record for futility, a 19-game slide at the end of the 1981-82 season. "If you are looking for wins and losses with our team, then we won't measure up," Cleveland coach John Lucas said. "But if you are looking for the progress of our 19-year-old kids, then we're moving up. Our young kids did a lot of good things. We don't have enough talent, but I thought Wagner and (Carlos) Boozer played tough." Grant collected 14 points and 10 rebounds for Miami, while Travis Best chipped in 13 points before rolling his ankle late in the fourth quarter. Best has struggled with ankle problems this season and is listed as day-to-day. Boozer tied a season high, grabbing 11 rebounds for the second straight game. He recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting. "The more minutes I get, the more comfortable I will get offensively," Boozer said. "I'm just going to keep working hard. ... I really worked hard for the 11 rebounds I had. That's going to be my calling card." Cleveland shot just 34 percent from the field (23-of-67) to Miami's 48 percent (37-of-77) but stayed close at the free-throw line. The Cavs made 28-of-39 foul shots compared to an 8-of-10 effort by the Heat. Cavaliers center Zydrunas Ilgauskas was held to seven points on 3-of-11 shooting. With center Vladimir Stepania suffering from back spasms, Miami often double-teamed Ilgauskas. "They were aggressive on defense on me," said Ilgauskas, who averaged 18 points in his previous three games. "Every time I did get the ball, there were two guys around me."
