Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- The combination of the Utah Jazz at home and Memphis Grizzlies on the road nearly guaranteed the outcome. Andrei Kirilenko led five players in double figures with 15 points as the Jazz bolted to an early lead and cruised past the sputtering Grizzlies, 104-71. Calbert Cheaney and Scott Padgett scored 14 points apiece for Utah, which posted its largest margin of victory this season and improved to 8-1 at home. Overall, the Jazz have won three straight games and nine of 10. The Jazz are 24-4 against the Grizzlies, but three of those four losses came last season. Stromile Swift scored 16 points for Memphis, which dropped to 0-10 on the road. The Grizzlies have dropped five straight games to fall to a league-worst 2-18. "They executed well with their smaller unit," Memphis coach Hubie Brown said of the Jazz. "I like their depth. I like their team." Memphis, which concluded a three-game road trip, was without starters Shane Battier and rookie Drew Gooden. "It's a combination of a good team and us shorthanded," Memphis center Lorenzen Wright said. "At the end of the road trip, some of our guys are tired." Utah, which plays three of its next four games at the Delta Center, bolted to a 12-1 lead and never looked back. The Jazz led, 100-61, with 4:10 to go. The Grizzlies need nearly 4 1/2 minutes to score, and the Jazz led, 31-19, after 12 minutes. "It was a good performance by our team," Cheaney said. "Our shots were falling tonight. As a team we played really well. We slowed them down with steals and blocks." Cheaney had six of his season-high 14 points in the first quarter. Malone and Matt Harpring had five apiece in the period. Utah pushed its lead to 51-34 at halftime. Memphis had gotten within 35-30 following a jumper by Wesley Person with 6:54 to go, but the Jazz scored 16 of the final 20 points in the period. Any chance the Grizzlies had of getting back into the game disappeared when the Jazz opened the third quarter with an 18-7 burst. The final 15 minutes served as garbage time as every Utah player saw at least seven minutes and all but John Amaechi managed to score. No Jazz starter played more than 30 minutes. "There's no garbage time in the players' mind," said Utah forward Scott Padgett, who logged 22 minutes. "To earn more minutes, you have to treat each minute as it's an experience." "It's always fun to play, but it's fun to watch our other guys and see their talent," Stockton said. "They support us and we support them." Utah shot 55.6 percent (45-of-81) from the field and held a 41-35 rebounding edge. Memphis shot just 34 percent (25-of-73), including 1-of-9 from 3-point range. "We did not play like we were supposed to play," Gasol said. "We had no spirit, no pride, no respect. Our heads were down, we had no energy." "We just didn't play good," Swift said. "We didn't rebound. They made shots. We didn't. Everything they did, we didn't do."
