Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- For the second time in three games, the New York Knicks had a chance for a tying shot and failed. Charlie Ward missed a long 3-point attempt in the closing seconds as the Knicks lost their third straight game, 100-97, to the Washington Wizards. "I was just trying to get a 3," Ward said. "We've been beaten before that way, so it was the best shot. I was open. I just missed it." The Knicks suffered an 87-85 defeat to Orlando on Wednesday when Howard Eisley could not get off a 3-pointer as time expired. Ward scored five points in the final 20 seconds as the Knicks got within a point after trailing by as many as 21 in the third quarter. New York's backup point guard had 16 points, six assists and six rebounds. "I'm not a moral victory guy," Knicks coach Don Chaney said of the comeback attempt. "I keep saying this, and I know it gets redundant after a while, but our players realize that with the makeup of our team we have to play a certain way every single night for four quarters. And for whatever reason, we're not getting it. And when we do get it, we have a stretch where we reap the benefits. "The way we finished the game is the way we have to play every single night for four quarters. If we lose playing that way, then fine, but that's how we have to play to have a chance." Larry Hughes and Jerry Stackhouse each made four free throws in the last minute to preserve the victory. Hughes had 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Stackhouse collected 22 points and seven assists. "We should have finished them off," Hughes said. "I think we played some really good basetball in the beginning of the game, but we just didn't finish out. We had them down and we should have kept them down." Michael Jordan showed that he still has an extra gear against the Knicks. After playing a season-high 39 minutes one night earlier in Orlando, Jordan scored 20 points in 36 minutes and pulled down nine boards. Jordan did wear down as the game went on, though, and missed a pair of key shots in the final two minutes as the Knicks used a 9-0 run to get back into the game. "We started losing our rhythm and doing things that weren't smart," Jordan said. "They fed off it and the momentum changed and we couldn't get it back. Our defense had to get it back for us. We started clamping down defensively and won the ballgame because we made our free throws down the stretch." The Wizards have won three of their last four games since shifting the lineup to include more of a veteran presence. Second-year center Kwame Brown and rookie forward Jared Jeffries did not play against the Knicks, while several Washington veterans set season highs. Charles Oakley had a season-best six points and six assists, while Christian Laettner scored a season-high 15 points. Hughes' points and assists totals were season highs as was Jordan's rebound mark. "I'm only going to play the guys that help us win," Wizards coach Doug Collins said. "Right now we are 3-1."
