Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks are fortunate to have a deep roster. Despite losing starting forwards Dirk Nowitzki and Adrian Griffin to injury, the Mavericks received 24 points apiece from guard Michael Finley and reserve Nick Van Exel and routed the Los Angeles Clippers, 122-95. Nowitzki was lost to a high ankle sprain with 2:58 to play in the first quarter while Griffin suffered a partially separated right shoulder with 5:32 remaining in the third. Neither player returned, and Nowitzki's injury looked potentially serious as he immediately winced in pain after teammate Popeye Jones accidentally rolled into his lower leg and foot. "It's tough, especially with a guy like Dirk because he wants to make this season a special one," Van Exel said of Nowitzki, who was averaging 22.6 points and 11.1 rebounds but had just two points and two points before going down with the injury. "I hope it's not too bad." After the game, Griffin and Nowitzki were listed as day-to-day with each expected to undergo further testing on Wednesday. After the Clippers scored the first four points of the second quarter, the Mavs closed the half on a 42-20 run to take a 68-45 advantage into the break. Steve Nash scored all 17 of his points, Finley 14 and Van Exel 13 in the first half. "When Dirk went down everyone had to step it up and I took it upon myself to do that," Finley said. Dallas, which set a season high in points for the second straight game, led by as many as 35 in the second half and improved to 10-0 at American Airlines Arena. Sacramento and Philadelphia are the only other undefeated teams at home. "To win a game as decisively like that and also be able to rest players is a blessing come true," said Mavs coach Don Nelson, who used Nash for just 26 minutes. "We were also blessed it was their second game in a row." Elton Brand contributed 20 points and 10 rebounds and Quentin Richardson 16 and 10 for Los Angeles, which had won a season-high three straight games, including becoming the first team to win at New Orleans with a 94-88 triumph on Monday. "That second quarter really put us behind," Brand said. "I was hoping that we could do something but I think after (the Mavs blew a 27-point fourth-quarter lead in a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday) they are going to try and protect big leads." The Mavs shot 53 percent (43-of-81), including 58 percent from beyond the arc (14-of-24), as they improved to 19-2. Dallas is shooting 52 percent from 3-point range through five games in December. "When they shoot like that from the 3-point line they are going to beat anybody," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "They made shots and that's how you get up 30. When they shoot the ball like that they are impossible to beat." Van Exel, who is averaging 19.8 points in six games since returning from knee surgery, made 6-of-10 3-pointers and fellow reserve guard Raja Bell was 3-of-3. "We have some good shooters that shoot the ball well from out there and we're going to continue to take them," Van Exel said. "We made shots, played pretty good defensively and just closed it out." The Clippers, who fell to 1-1 on a four-game road trip, connected on just 41 percent (36-of-88) of its shots, including 22 percent on its 3-point attempts (4-of-18). "It's hard to get it back up but we don't want to make any excuses," Brand said. "Dallas is a good team and they hit some big shots. It just didn't fall our way and we didn't hit our shots." The Mavs recorded 29 assists - 14 more than the Clippers - to improve to 12-0 when they finish with more assists than their opponent. "We've got a lot of guys down right now," Nelson said. "But we're playing so many games we just keep trucking and plugging players in."
