Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Memphis Grizzlies finally hit some big shots on the road in the fourth quarter. Rookie Drew Gooden scored 25 points and Pau Gasol and Wesley Person added 24 apiece as the Grizzlies recorded their first road victory of the season, a 107-96 triumph over the Miami Heat. Memphis had lost its first 10 road games, including six by 10 points or less. The Grizzlies had been unable to make clutch shots on the road until Tuesday, when they dominated the fourth quarter with a strong shooting display. Memphis made 11-of-15 shots in the final period, led by Gooden, who made 4-of-5. The Grizzlies also came through defensively, holding the Heat to 4-of-20 shooting in the final 12 minutes. "We had a good game and got the win and that is the most important thing," Gooden said. "In the fourth quarter we needed someone to step up. Tonight, not only was it me, but the whole team stepped up." "What we are proud of tonight is our fourth quarter," Memphis coach Hubie Brown said. "The fourth quarter was our best quarter of the season. We can't say enough about the five guys on the floor because they put the ball in the hoop tonight." Gooden buried a jumper with 7:50 remaining to give the Grizzlies the lead for good at 86-84 and spark a decisive 11-0 run. Gasol had a pair of jumpers during the burst, capping it with an 18-footer for a 95-84 lead with 3:48 left. Gooden made 11-of-15 shots and Person 8-of-11 as Memphis shot a blistering 59 percent (40-of-68), including 5-of-6 from 3-point range. "It is a lot easier with guys hitting shots," said Memphis point guard Brevin Knight, who dished out 14 assists. "All I had to do was throw it to them at the right time. We just clicked tonight. It was one of those games when everybody was on the same page." Lorenzen Wright scored eight of his 15 points in the first quarter for the Grizzlies, who recorded 30 assists and committed only nine turnovers. Eddie Jones scored a season-high 33 points and Eddie House had 15 for the Heat, who have lost four straight and six of their last eight. "We played with a lot of energy until we went offensively dead in the water in the fourth quarter," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We attacked, but it really flattened everything else out. They just kept shooting the lights out." It was a dominant performance by Jones, who had scored just 12 points in his last three games combined. He made 13-of-21 shots from the floor, including 4-of-6 3-point attempts, and grabbed six rebounds. "I wanted to go in and be aggressive," he said. "I wasn't going to be looking to always check with everybody. I was going to try and get my game going, and after that get everybody else's going." "He was absolutely above and beyond," Riley said. "He was very energetic, very aggressive. That was very good to see. That's the Eddie Jones I know." The Grizzlies had a 54-51 halftime lead before opening the second half with an 11-2 run. Person sparked the spurt with a four-point play and Gasol's 20-foot jumper gave Memphis a 65-53 cushion. The Heat responded with a 25-11 run to close the quarter. Jones scored 13 points during the stretch and House scored the final five, burying a jumper with 17 seconds left for a 78-76 lead. Gasol scored nine points in the first quarter as Memphis jumped out to a 34-27 lead. The Grizzlies had a 52-39 lead with 3:51 left in the second before the Heat closed the half with a 12-2 run - highlighted by six points from Jones.
