Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Chauncey Billups burned the zone defense of the Chicago Bulls. Billups nailed a pair of key 3-pointers in the final four minutes and scored 21 points to lead the Detroit Pistons to an 86-76 victory over the Bulls. Billups' 3-pointer with 3:44 remaining extended Detroit's lead to 74-70, and Corliss Williamson scored 41 seconds later for a six-point advantage, prompting a timeout by the Bulls. "I felt I needed to be aggressive tonight," Billups said. "They left me open and the guys did a nice job of finding me." Chicago got baskets by Donyell Marshall and Jalen Rose around another inside hoop by Williamson to cut the deficit to 78-74 with 91 seconds to go. Clifford Robinson then found an open Billups on the right side and he drilled another 3-pointer with 67 seconds left. "Chauncey Billups was the difference in the game for us," Detroit coach Rick Carlisle said. "His shot-making and great defense were the difference." "We were in a zone both times," Chicago coach Bill Cartwright said. "We rotated around and just did not get to him." Richard Hamilton scored 20 points, despite missing his final 10 shots, and added a career-high nine assists. Ben Wallace grabbed 21 rebounds, his fifth game with more than 20. "Another day at the office," Wallace said. "Just punching the clock. Just keep my head above water, trying to stay afloat." Detroit has won five straight at Chicago and owns a 14-2 record against the Bulls since Michael Jordan's second retirement in 1998. Chicago trailed through most of the second half before Jamal Crawford scored seven straight points for a 68-66 lead with 6:23 remaining. Marcus Fizer's runner with just over five minutes to go gave the Bulls a 70-68 advantage. Hamilton converted a technical free throw after a defensive three-second violation by the Bulls. Ben Wallace converted a layup with 4:31 remaining to give the Pistons a lead for good, setting up Billups' 3-pointers. "You can't expect to play with a cushion the whole game," Carlisle said. "The other team is going to come back at you at some time. It's how you respond to them that is the key." Chicago's execution down the stretch left a lot to be desired as Jalen Rose fired up a pair of ill-advised 3-pointers and rookie Jay Williams' shot with 54 seconds left was blocked by Robinson. "We would prefer to see the ball go inside and then out," Cartwright said. "When you take a quick 3, you are really on your own. If it does not go in, it is a bad shot." Williamson came off the bench for 14 points and Robinson added 11 for Detroit. Hamilton, who finished 4-of-18 from the floor, made up for it by draining 12-of-13 free throws. Detroit shot just 38 percent (31-of-81) and made just 5-of-19 from beyond the arc. The Pistons did it with defense by forcing 16 turnovers, 12 in the first half. "They're a tough defensive team and they're well prepared," said Rose, a Detroit native. "Everybody understands their role. They don't play any young players. They come out and play tough defense and understand their assignments." Rose made just 7-of-23 shots for 15 points and Marshall added 14 to lead Chicago. Fizer came off the bench for 13 points but Williams was harassed by Billups into 4-of-12 shooting for just nine points.
