Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Paul Pierce scored 15 of his 29 points in the third quarter as the Boston Celtics routed the New York Knicks, 113-90. Pierce added 10 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season as Boston won for the fourth time in five games. "I wanted to give us some momentum in the second half and I was able to hit some tough shots," Pierce said. "I just wanted to ride it out and keep it going. I think we're starting to groove it a little." Pierce has excelled in Boston's three wins against New York this season, averaging 31.3 points and 8.3 rebounds. The Celtics have won seven straight games in the series, including the last four at Madison Square Garden. The Celtics controlled the game from the opening tap, scoring 12 points before the Knicks made their first basket over four minutes into the first quarter. They started with a 12-1 run and led 52-44 at halftime behind 15 points from Antoine Walker and 10 from Pierce. Pierce shot 5-of-9 in the third quarter, which the Celtics started with a 16-6 run. Boston shot 11-of-19 in the period and outscored New York, 29-16, to take an 83-60 lead. "Tonight, we got some hot shooting from Paul," Walker said. "Overall we feel pretty good about ourselves. ... Every game, we're getting more and more comfortable." Walker, who posted a triple-double against Cleveland on Friday night, collected 23 points, five rebounds and three assists. New York's early struggles continued throughout the game. The Knicks shot 39 percent (29-of-75) and failed in a bid for a third straight win, which would have matched a season high. Instead, they suffered their worst defeat of the season. "It is definitely disappointing," Knicks guard Allan Houston said. "We had high hopes coming into this game, especially coming off what we thought were two solid wins. It is hard to really get over the hump. You get two wins and then you get set back." Latrell Sprewell, who scored 30 points at Miami on Friday, was held to 13. Houston led the Knicks with 24 points. "They probably were a little more tired than we were," Celtics coach Jim O'Brien said. "They had to travel a little more distance (from Miami) than we did last night (from Boston). Sprewell and Houston had a lot of open looks, and fortunately for us, they did not knock them down." The Celtics are 9-0 when scoring 100 or more points and have topped the century mark in each of their last three victories. "Defensively, you have to be real energetic," Knicks coach Don Chaney said. "I thought fatigue set in. We just didn't have the energy we had last night. Against Boston, you have to have the energy." Boston forward Vin Baker provided a spark off the bench, scoring 16 points and grabbing six rebounds in 22 minutes. "He played his best game as a Celtic," O'Brien said. "He played outstanding defense and he hurt them inside with his scoring. I've maintained all along that the longer Vin is in a Celtic uniform, the more everyone's going to realize why he's a Celtic. We think he's on track to have a real solid season for us."
