Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- For one more night, anyway, Jordan ruled. Coming off his worst career scoring effort, Michael Jordan netted a season-high 30 points and Jerry Stackhouse added 23 a the Washington Wizards handed the Atlanta Hawks their fourth straight loss, 109-99. Jordan scored 18 points in the first half to pace the hot-shooting Wizards to a 64-53 lead at the break. Atlanta fought back, closing within 95-90 on Shareef Abdur-Rahim's free throws with 2:45 to go. But Jordan drove the right wing and put up a wild lefthanded scoop shot that went in and Stackhouse added a fast-break dunk following a blocked shot for a 104-95 advantage with 2:16 left. "I've been working on that, I've had confidence that I could do it," Jordan said. "I wasn't going to settle on a jump shot. It was my left hand and I shot it. I can use my left hand." Jordan was 12-of-18 from the field and 6-of-6 at the line. On Sunday, he tied a career low with two points in a win over Toronto. "I don't want anybody to think I can't score," Jordan said. "I can go nights where I score two as long as we win. Don't ever underestimate my scoring ability." Glenn Robinson netted 33 points for the Hawks, who are mired in their longest skid of the season. "We have to play with more pride," Robinson said. "We just can't let teams come in here and get off to good starts and have their way." The Wizards used a big first quarter to propel them to their second straight road triumph. Stackhouse scored 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting - including 3-of-3 from behind the arc - as Washington took a 34-22 lead after one. "We had a lot of guys step up and do good things for us," Stackhouse said. "We were able to shoot the ball well in the first half and get off to a good start." Jordan's two free throws gave the Wizards their biggest lead at 50-31 with 6:31 left in the half, but the Hawks scrambled within 64-53 at halftime after Robinson's buzzer-beating 3-pointer. It was the highest first-half scoring output of the season for Washington, which went 4-of-4 from 3-point range while shooting 65 percent (26-of-40) overall for the half. The Hawks closed the gap in the third quarter. After Jordan's jumper gave the Wizards a 80-67 lead, Robinson and Abdur-Rahim each scored four points in an 8-0 burst to close within 80-75. Washington held on, and after Jason Terry's jumper narrowed the margin to 89-86 with 8:14 to play, Charles Oakley nailed a 16-footer for his only points of the game, Brendan Haywood hit two free throws and Stackhouse sank a basket for a 95-86 lead with 6:43 left. Atlanta climbed back within five several times, but the Wizards answered each threat. "Tough times in general," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "Obviously, we dug ourselves a big hole. The Wizards opened up shooting the ball and shotting well. Fighting back and getting back into it was obviously a better stretch." Larry Hughes collected 20 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals and Haywood contributed 11 points and eight boards for the Wizards, who shot 56 percent (40-of-72) from the floor to win their fourth in a row over Atlanta. "Right now, as a team we think that nobody can beat us," Hughes said. "That's how we try to look at everything." Theo Ratliff added 12 points and 11 rebounds and Abdur-Rahim chipped in with 10 rebounds and six boards as the Hawks shot 45 percent (33-of-73) from the field. Robinson and Abdur-Rahim combined on 18-of-33 shooting from the field but the rest of the team managed just 36.5 percent (15-of-41).
