Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Chauncey Billups scored 23 points, including eight straight in overtime, to lead the Detroit Pistons to their season-high fifth straight win, a 111-106 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Billups broke the 103-103 deadlock in the extra period, putting home a running jumper between a pair of 3-pointers. He led six players in double figures for the Pistons, who have won five in a row for the first time since February 14-22 of last season. "I don't know why, but I just keep getting these shots late in the game. I welcome that opportunity any time," Billups said. Chucky Atkins nailed four 3-pointers and Billups and Cliff Robinson hit three apiece as the Pistons shot 13-of-24 (54 percent) from the arc. "Chauncey was real solid the whole game," Pistons coach Rick Carlisle said. "When he goes periods without shots, you know eventually he's going to get some open shots and he's been great at big ones for us late in games." Detroit owned a 92-83 advantage midway through the fourth quarter but was outscored 18-9 down the stretch. Cleveland's Ricky Davis converted a pair of free throws with 26 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime. Cleveland's Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored 29 points and Davis added 20. But the Cavaliers went just 8-of-15 from the line in the fourth period and lost for the 20th time in their last 23 games. "Our free-throw shooting is where the game was lost," Cavaliers coach John Lucas said. "We could have won that game in regulation if we made our free throws." Ilgauskas hit a jumper with 3:23 to go in overtime and knotted the contest at 103-103. But Billups nailed a 3-pointer less than a minute later to restore Detroit's lead. After Wallace pulled down his 19th rebound - the most at Gund Arena by a visiting player - with just over two minutes remaining, Billups' ensuing basket made it 108-103. Off a timeout, Cavaliers rookie Carlos Boozer attempted a layup, but Wallace was there for his third blocked shot. Richard Hamilton found Billups at the arc with 69 seconds left. "I thought our defense was much better for long periods of time tonight," Lucas said. "It's frustrating whenever we play a team that shoots 3-pointers. They always seem to make them." Rookie Smush Parker sparked Cleveland's comeback with a dunk with 5:39 to go, closing the deficit to 92-85. Ilgauskas made just 1-of-2 from the line with 5:10 left to contribute the Cavaliers' fourth-quarter struggles. Parker hit a pair from the line and Jumaine Jones made a jumper with 3 1/2 minutes remaining to pull Cleveland within 97-94. "It didn't come together for us at the end," Parker said. "Their second team came in and picked up right where (the first team) left off." Jon Barry scored 17 points as Detroit's bench outscored Cleveland's, 49-30. Ilgauskas again hit just 1-of-2 free throws with 61 seconds left to cut the deficit to 101-99. After Detroit's Corliss Williamson missed a hook shot, the reserve forward fouled Davis. Cleveland's leading scorer with 22.5 points per game, Davis put home both free throws to knot the contest. Davis' wild shot from the left sideline as time expired hit the rim. "The play got all screwed up, it was a desperation shot," he said.
