Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Paul Pierce outhustled and outmuscled one of the best rebounding teams in the NBA and made a bit of history in the process. Pierce scored 42 points - 16 on free throws - and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Boston Celtics held on for a 108-99 triumph over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Walter McCarty scored a season-high 14 points for Boston. It was just the second time in over two years that Pierce and fellow All-Star Antoine Walker did not lead the team in scoring. Walker finished with 13 and eight boards as Boston avoided its first three-game losing streak of the season. Pierce's explosion marked the fifth time a Celtic has scored 40-plus points in the seven-year history of the FleetCenter. He has three of those games. "I wanted to be aggressive getting into the lane, taking shots and getting to the line," said Pierce, who was 11-of-25 from the field. The Timberwolves entered the contest ranked fifth in the league in rebounding and had outrebounded their opponents in seven of the last eight games before being beaten on the boards, 44-39. "This was one of the best rebounding teams in the league," said Pierce, who had 13 defensive boards. "So I just wanted to make a concentrated effort on the glass." With the game tied, 88-88, midway through the fourth period, Boston was able to pull away, with Pierce scoring 12 of the team's final 20 points and Shammond Williams adding four of his 12. "Usually when someone gets 42, you say, 'Oh, he took a lot of shots,'" Williams said. "But tonight, that just wasn't the case." From the outset, Boston was driving the lane and drawing fouls, outshooting Minnesota 37-16 at the line. "When a team shoots twice as many free throws as you do, there can be frustration," Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders said. Particularly when the Celtics made just three baskets in the third quarter and shot 21 percent from the floor but still managed to take a three-point lead into the final period. Pierce, who finished 16-of-18 from the line, made all seven attempts in the third. "He took advantage of everything that was given to him," Minnesota guard Kendall Gill said. "We don't meet them again this year so we don't have to worry about him anymore." It doesn't get any easier for Minnesota, which saw Allen Iverson drop 41 on Wednesday night and faces Steve Francis of Houston at home on Saturday as part of a stretch four games in five nights. "We've got to find a better way to slow down these 2-guards," said Kevin Garnett, who had a team-high 27 points and eight rebounds for Minnesota. Rasho Nesterovic collected 19 points and 13 boards and Troy Hudson scored 16 points for the Wolves, who had won their last four visits here. Pierce, who was 4-of-8 from 3-point range, scored the final 10 points of the first half to finish with 21 and push Boston's lead to eight. The Celtics, who attempted 31 three-pointers in their win at Minnesota on November 9, hit 14-of-32 from behind the arc.
