Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- After playing two overtime games in three nights, the Detroit Pistons had trouble handling the high-energy New Jersey Nets. Jason Kidd had 27 points and 12 assists and Richard Jefferson scored 19 points as the Nets extended their home winning streak to nine games with a 100-92 victory over the Pistons. Detroit had a league-best 6-1 record in the second half of back-to-back games but trailed the entire second half against the Nets as the fatigue of consecutive overtime contests began to show. "We have enough depth. These guys work hard enough that fatigue should not be a factor for us," Detroit coach Rick Carlisle said. "I'm not going to make excuses about the loss. I think the Nets played better and that is why they won the game." "If you're looking for an excuse, that's a good one," Pistons center Ben Wallace said. "Playing back-to-back games, it's very important that you control the tempo. We knew we didn't want to get them into an up-and-down game, and that's exactly what we did." The Nets are one of the best running teams in the league and outscored the Pistons 21-9 in fast-break points. New Jersey improved to 14-1 at Continental Airlines Arena and snapped a five-game home losing streak against Detroit, which had not lost at the Meadowlands since January 20, 2000. "We're very comfortable at home and you can see that tonight," Kidd said. "It's kind of a carryover from last season. We want to try to protect home-court as much as we can." Lucious Harris scored 16 points, reserve Rodney Rogers added 13 and Kenyon Martin 12 for the Nets, who shot 52 percent (37-of-71) from the floor. Detroit trailed by as many as 15 points in the third quarter but used a 9-0 run to pull within 73-68 with 85 seconds remaining. Kidd answered with a 3-pointer, assisted on a layup by Harris and threw an alley-oop pass to Jefferson that gave New Jersey an 80-68 cushion entering the final period. "We hung in and made some runs, but the Nets answered it every time," Carlisle said. "They made plays and shot a great percentage. The Nets earned the win." Kidd had nine points in the final period as the Nets cruised to their seventh win in nine games. New Jersey had its largest lead at 89-73 on a 3-pointer by Rogers with just under seven minutes remaining. Clifford Robinson scored 19 points and Wallace collected 11, 14 rebounds and four steals for Detroit, which had a season-high six-game winning streak snapped. Chauncey Billups had 13 points and leading-scorer Richard Hamilton was held to 13 for the Pistons, who shot 49 percent (33-of-67) but could not overcome 23 turnovers that led to 30 points for the Nets. "I thought our pressure was forcing them into turnovers, and it was the key to getting up and down the floor and getting some easy baskets," New Jersey coach Byron Scott said. "Tonight the thing we talked about was to make sure our level of intensity was just as high as theirs." Robinson scored six points in the opening six minutes as Detroit jumped out to 15-8 lead. But New Jersey responded with nine consecutive points led by Harris, who had a fast-break layup and a 3-pointer during the spurt. The Pistons took a 29-26 lead on a 3-pointer by Chucky Atkins 1:56 into the second quarter. But Atkins committed a turnover on Detroit's next possession and Anthony Johnson wound up with a fast-break dunk, sparking an 8-0 run by New Jersey. Kidd followed with a layup to give the Nets the lead for good at 30-29. He added two free throws and a layup before Jefferson made a 22-foot jumper to end the burst and give New Jersey a 34-29 edge. Kidd scored 11 points in the second quarter and the Nets had a 53-44 halftime lead.
