Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Mike James took over during a two-minute stretch bridging the final two quarters and helped the Miami Heat rally for their season-high third straight win, 92-84 over the New York Knicks. James beat the third-quarter buzzer with a running jumper to put Miami ahead for good, 67-65, then scored the first five points in the final period. He poured in 13 of his 17 points in the second half as the Heat erased an early 14-point deficit. "It wasn't that I felt that I could take over," James said. "They just gave me a lot of good looks. The main focus for me was just to remain aggressive. "I don't feel like I was that aggressive in the first half. In the second half, the more aggressive I got, the more it helped." Eddie Jones scored 22 points to lead six players in double figures for Miami, which had not won three in a row since a four-game streak from February 28-March 6. The Heat also got 17 points from Malik Allen and 13 from Travis Best. "We've been playing really well this last stretch of games," Allen said. "I think that we're finally starting to do some of the things that we've been concentrating on since the beginning of the season." Miami avenged its loss to New York on December 13. After that game, which the Heat lost, 97-92, Riley criticized the officiating and earned a $50,000 fine for his remarks, including some personal ones against Steve Javie. "I didn't give it that much thought, but I was a little surprised," Riley said of Javie's presence at Madison Square Garden. Riley joked that he'd give his opinion of Javie's performance for another $50,000. A layup by Clarence Weatherspoon gave New York its largest lead, 39-25, with 9:42 to go in the second quarter. But the Knicks totaled just 35 points after halftime and lost for the third time in four games. "We didn't make shots," Knicks center Kurt Thomas said. "It came down to Miami made big shots with Mike James and Allen for them. They hit some huge shots, both played extremely well and we just didn't hit shots on the other end." Thomas was one of the few Knicks who was more productive in the second half, collecting 10 of his 16 points and six of his nine rebounds after the break. Howard Eisley totaled 19 points and five assists but faded after hitting three 3-pointers to help the Knicks build their first-quarter lead. "In the second half, we tried to force shots," New York coach Don Chaney said. "When you get to that point where you lack patience in your offense, you end up taking bad shots." The Knicks shot 26.5 percent (13-of-49) in the second half and made only one field goal in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter.
