Game StoryNEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Despite their reputation as an offensive powerhouse, the Dallas Mavericks continue to win big games on the road with defense. Dirk Nowitzki scored 23 points, buried the go-ahead jumper with three minutes left and blocked the game's final shot as the Mavericks posted an 83-81 victory over the New Orleans Hornets. Dallas is the only team in the NBA that averages more than 100 points per game, and it has the league's best road record at 11-3. The Mavericks have road wins over New Jersey and Detroit, which are a combined 26-3 at home, and handed the Hornets their second loss in 13 games at New Orleans Arena. "It was a win against a quality team and just one in which both teams didn't shoot very well," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "It was good to win a game against a quality team on the road and get back into that frame of mind." Dallas shot just 38 percent (34-of-90) from the floor but committed only eight turnovers. The Hornets were held to 39 percent (31-of-79) shooting and had 18 turnovers, leading to 24 points for the Mavs. "We knew it was going to be a tough game," Nowitzki said. "To get it out and make some big shots down the stretch and win this game on the road is big." "We had some inadvertent turnovers," New Orleans coach Paul Silas said. "We had our chance. It just didn't happen." Nowitzki sank a fadeaway jumper with 3:06 remaining to give the Mavericks the lead for good at 80-79 - the 19th lead change in a game that also featured 14 ties. New Orleans' P.J. Brown was called for an inbounds violation, and Michael Finley buried a fallaway jumper from the top of the key with 2:37 remaining. The Hornets failed to respond, missing five shots on their next possession, including a pair of jumpers by Jamal Mashburn. "We worked hard on the defensive end, but we were also a little lucky," Nelson said. "They had three good looks at shots, but the force was with us at that particular time because they were all either a little long or short. Had they made one of those shots, the whole game could've reversed itself right there." Brown had a dunk to bring the Hornets within 82-81 with 67 seconds left, and Nowitzki missed a layup at the other end. But New Orleans squandered an opportunity to take the lead as David Wesley missed two wide-open 3-pointers. "We had open looks at the end and we didn't hit them," Silas said. "I'd have Wesley take (the shots) again. He can take those looks anytime." "When the shots left my hand, you couldn't have told me they weren't good," Wesley said. "They probably felt better than any shots all night." Dallas' Shawn Bradley missed a baseline jumper with five seconds left, but Finley and Steve Nash helped tip the rebound to teammate Nick Van Exel, who was fouled with four-tenths of a second remaining. Van Exel missed the first free throw but made the second, giving New Orleans a chance for a game-tying shot. Nowitzki blocked Baron Davis' jumper at the buzzer and Dallas held on for its fifth win in six games. Nash scored 15 points, Van Exel added 13 off the bench and Bradley collected 10, 10 rebounds and five blocks for the Mavs, who have won six straight meetings with the Hornets. Wesley scored 24 points and Jamaal Magloire had 10 and 15 rebounds for New Orleans, which lost despite a 53-43 rebounding advantage. Brown added 11 points and Davis had 10 and 11 assists as the struggling Hornets lost for the fifth time in six games.
