Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Eddie Jones scored 28 points and Vladimir Stepania added a season-high 14 as the Miami Heat held the Boston Celtics to nine points in the fourth quarter en route to a 90-70 victory. The Heat took the lead with a 10-0 run at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. They held the Celtics to 28 percent (22-of-79) shooting from the field and enjoyed a 58-30 advantage on the glass. It was the second double-digit triumph over the Celtics in 10 days for the last-place Heat. They posted a 91-81 victory in Boston on December 18. Paul Pierce and Antoine Walker shot a combined 9-of-37 from the field and finished with 19 and 16 points, respectively, for the Celtics, who were coming off Wednesday's 117-81 loss at New Jersey. "The shots have not been falling," Walker said. "We have gotten good looks at the basket, some great looks tonight. We just have to get back to being a very gutty team on the defensive end. I think myself and other guys on the team are not making shots and that has affected other parts of our game." Stepania also had 14 rebounds, Brian Grant grabbed 12 and Jones came away with eight as the Heat crashed the boards. "Today was the first kind of game I was able to shoot the ball like that," said Stepania, who was 7-of-11 from the floor. "Everybody's been shooting jumpers, I've been shooting, too. But it's more important to use my size than to shoot the `J.'" "I knew I was going to come out and play well," Jones said. "I knew they haven't been playing that great and I was at the point where I'm just going. They're going to foul me, but I'm going to attack the rim and make plays." Travis Best finished with 13 points and a season-high seven assists and rookie Caron Butler and Malin Allen each scored 10 points for Miami, which shot 48 percent (38-of-79). The Celtics' 3-point struggles was a big factor to their horrendous shooting percentage. Boston was just 4-of-26 from behind the arc, with Walker the biggest offender at 1-of-8. "It seemed to me that we missed shots we normally make," Celtics coach Jim O'Brien said. "They made shots, but they worked hard and certainly deserved the victory." Trailing 21-15 after a 14-footer by Walker, the Heat pulled even on a pair of free throws and a jumper by Jones around Best's bucket. Stepania's basket with 89 seconds left gave Miami the lead for good and Jones added a tip-in to cap a 10-0 run. Jones scored 13 points in the first quarter and 20 in the half, helping Miami to a 55-41 advantage at the break. "Eddie really took off, he had a great half and a great quarter," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "He got us back into the game and he was making plays and making shots. He's playing as well as any two in the game. You have to give him that credit." After whittling the deficit to 68-61 at the end of the third quarter, the Celtics looked poised to make a run. But Jones converted a three-point play, Stepania uncharacteristically hit two deep jumpers and Best drilled a 3-pointer for a 78-61 cushion with 7:44 to go. "(Stepania) had his lucky suit on, we're going to make him wear that suit every day," Jones joked. "If I have to pay to have that suit dry-cleaned every day, I will." "It has to be for the whole four quarters. We cannot continue to do this," Pierce said. "This has been going on for the last four or five games now, where we dig ourselves in a hole and somehow have to get out of it." Tony Delk scored 13 points and Eric Williams added 11 for the Celtics, who have dropped three of their last four on the road.
