Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- The bombastic commentary of broadcaster Tommy Heinsohn finally got the Boston Celtics in trouble. Tracy McGrady scored 25 points and Mike Miller added 20 as the Orlando Magic - inspired by Heinson's criticism - posted a 101-95 victory over the Celtics. Heinsohn is known as one of the NBA's most opinionated and parochial announcers for his unwavering support of the Celtics. But his remarks during Boston's December 9 victory over Orlando were used as motivation when a tape of the game was found inside the Magic locker room. "I have no idea how the tape got into our locker room, but it did," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "Basically, he belittled every single player on our team. All kinds of things were called and said about Tracy and Mike Miller and Pat Garrity. He basically didn't leave anybody out." "When you disrespect us like that, (we're) definitely going to take that and use that as motivation on the court," McGrady added. "We kept that in the back of our minds." Orlando got off to a fast start and cruised through most of the first three quarters, leading by as many as 19 points. The Magic had a 15-point cushion late in the third before going without a basket for nearly 10 minutes. Boston rallied for an 87-86 lead on a runner by Paul Pierce with 5:23 remaining. The Celtics were ahead for the first time since the first quarter, but McGrady made two free throws 45 seconds later to give the Magic the lead for good. Darrell Armstrong buried Orlando's first basket of the fourth quarter, a baseline jumper with 4:03 remaining, and McGrady made 1-of-2 free throws. Miller followed with a 3-pointer at the 2:50 mark to give the Magic a 95-89 cushion. Eric Williams made two free throws and, after McGrady missed a pair from the line, Tony Delk's tip shot brought the Celtics within 95-93. But McGrady responded with a tough jumper over Shammond Williams from just inside the 3-point line with 32 seconds to go. "You can't let a great player decide the game, although he eventually did," Boston coach Jim O'Brien said. "He made a clutch shot that was defended extremely well that broke our backs in the end." Miller blocked Paul Pierce's 3-pointer at the other end and finished a fast break with a dunk to seal the victory for the Magic, who snapped a three-game losing streak against the Celtics. Armstrong had 17 points and fellow reserve Andrew DeClercq added season highs of 13 points and 12 rebounds for Orlando, which shot just 30 percent (10-of-33) in the second half, including 1-of-10 from 3-point range. "It's tough to hold a big lead, but we've got to learn to do it a little better than what we're doing," Miller said. "We're making every game close. Right now, it's just thankful to hold on to win." Pierce finished with 35 points and Williams added 16 off the bench for Boston, which has lost three in a row for the first time this season. Vin Baker had 11 points and Eric Williams scored 10, but Antoine Walker was held to nine points as he was bothered by a stomach bug that affected several players on the Celtics' four-game road trip. The Celtics, who managed just 28 percent shooting in Friday's loss to Miami, shot 37 percent (30-of-82) and made only 4-of-21 from behind the arc. "I am happy with the way we have competed, but there are no moral victories in the NBA," Pierce said. "You win and you lose. If I knew the answer for it, we would have solved it by now. We just have to take it upon ourselves not to fall behind early in games." McGrady scored 10 points in the first quarter as Orlando jumped out to a 33-20 lead. He had six points during a 16-7 burst that Magic used to close the first half for a 65-47 advantage. Orlando had its largest lead at 70-51 on a free throw by McGrady less than three minutes into the third quarter. The All-Star swingman had a driving dunk with 1:52 left for an 81-66 cushion, but the Magic did not make another basket until the 4:03 mark of the fourth.
