Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Just when it looked like 
their winning streak was about to stop, the Portland Trail
Blazers stopped the Detroit Pistons.

The Trail Blazers held the Pistons scoreless for more than six
minutes of the fourth quarter and extended their season-high
winning streak to eight games with an 85-74 victory over
Detroit.

Rasheed Wallace scored 19 points and Bonzi Wells added 17 for
the Blazers, who also have won five straight road games.  The
overall winning streak is their longest since taking 12 in a row
from February 17-March 8 of last season.

"I think it was a good time for us when we went on the road on
the last road trip," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said.  "I
think we bonded, we got away from some tough times in Portland
and then we kind of bonded a little bit, understanding some of
the things it takes for us to win the game.  I think when you go
on the road it makes you focus a little bit more, makes you
bond a little bit more."

"It's just us, man, it's all about our team," Wells added.
"We've got to stick together.  Adversity strikes and we're just
coming together as a family, as brothers.  We've just been doing
the family thing, trying to stick together."

Portland appeared to be cruising to another win as it opened a
68-55 lead late in the third quarter.  But Detroit put together
a 13-0 surge led by Jon Barry and tied it, 68-68, with 8:28 to
play.

Wallace made a lane jumper that gave the Blazers the lead for
good and immediately reversed the momentum.  The Pistons went
cold and did not score again until the 2:07 mark.

By that time, Cliff Robinson had fouled out, coach Rick Carlisle
had been ejected and the Blazers had opened an 83-68 advantage.

"We're fighting a stigma, so to speak," Blazers guard Derek
Anderson said.  "I think that's what's we have to do, keep
playing regardless of what happens.  Bad guys, you know how it
is.  The world's against you, so you just play together and you
stick together as a team.  I think it's just important that we
stay together.  That was something last year that we had an up
and down problem with.  This year, we don't."

Richard Hamilton scored 22 points and Ben Wallace pulled down 20
rebounds for the Pistons, who had a two-game winning streak
stopped.

"We made a nice run when we tied it at 68 and I had some bad
turnovers around that time and they made the plays," Barry said.
"They are awfully good.  Their length and their defense are
good.  We shot 35 percent and they did a nice job defensively."

Detroit's troubles against Portland continued.  It has lost the
last five meetings as well as the last five at home.

A hook by Rasheed Wallace gave the Blazers their largest lead at
68-55 with 1:35 left in the third quarter.  Barry and Corliss
Williamson each made two free throws to end the period, and
Barry opened the fourth quarter with a pair of 3-pointers,
cutting the deficit to 68-65.

After Barry sank a foul shot for a technical whistled against
Portland's Ruben Patterson, Williamson scored inside to tie it.

After Rasheed Wallace scored, Scottie Pippen threw in a hook and
Wells took a steal the length of the court for a layup and a
74-68 lead with 5:46 left.

As Robinson and Carlisle departed, Dale Davis had a pair of
baskets and Anderson made three free throws, helping push the
lead to 83-68 with 2:38 to play.

"We're playing together," Anderson said.  "We have runs where
we've given up a lead, but we still stay together whereas last
year people were complaining about playing, there were so many
other things.  Now nobody complains, they just play."

Anderson scored 14 points and Davis swept 10 boards for the
Blazers, who shot 46 percent (29-of-63) from the field.

Williamson scored 16 points and Barry added 14 for the Pistons,
who shot just 36 percent (26-of-73).  Robinson was 2-of-8 from
the field and Chauncey Billups 0-of-6.

"One of the things we talked about going into the game was to
try and have some individual defense and put a focus on guarding
Rip Hamilton, Chauncey Billups and Cliff Robinson," Cheeks
said.  "Really, that was the key to our game.  When one of the
big three got the ball, we stepped in and helped and rotated
back to the other guy."
