Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Don't look now, but the bickering, temperamental Portland Trail Blazers are playing as a team. Bonzi Wells scored 19 points to lead six players in double figures and the Trail Blazers posted their ninth victory in 10 games, 108-103 over the Boston Celtics. Scottie Pippen posted an impressive overall effort, collecting 17 points, eight rebounds, six steals and four assists as Portland improved to 3-1 on its five-game road trip, which concludes Sunday in New York. "It showed that we're starting to play some good basketball in my eyes," Pippen said. "Anytime you can respond to a loss like we had the other night and come out and play as well as we did tonight, on the road against a tough team, give ourselves credit. We came in here and won on their court." Antoine Walker and Paul Pierce combined for six points on 2-of-7 shooting in the fourth quarter for Boston. Pierce credited Pippen's strong defense. "He played tough defense on me, but that's him," Pierce said. "He's a great player. He's one of the top 50 players of all-time. We knew what we had to get done to win the game and we didn't accomplish either one of them." The Trail Blazers led most of the way until Shammond Williams capped a 9-0 run with a basket that gave the Celtics an 89-87 edge with 8:21 remaining. Portland answered with a decisive 11-2 burst, taking a 91-89 lead on a jumper by Ruben Patterson with 6:24 to play and settling into a 98-91 advantage with Jeff McInnis' bucket with 4:22 left. "That was a good offensive game by us, pushing the ball up, running our screen and rolls," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "We stuck with our game plan. We pretty much ran it too perfection for a while." Patterson finished with 15 points for the Trail Blazers, who hit 15-of-18 shots in the opening quarter to take a 36-25 lead after one period. They went on to shoot 53 percent (39-of-74) from the field. Zach Randolph netted 12 points and nine boards, Arvydas Sabonis scored 11 points and Rasheed Wallace added 10 and eight rebounds for Portland, which held a 45-32 rebounding edge. Portland was without starting point guard Derek Anderson, who sat with a sprained left ankle. "Guys had to step up today because we had some guys out," Patterson said. "It was a total team effort and I'm just glad we got the win." Walker scored 17 of his 31 points in the second quarter and Pierce netted 17 of his 25 in the third, when the Celtics reduced a 13-point deficit to 83-77 after three quarters. "It's tough to play Paul and Antoine 46-47 minutes," Boston coach Jim O'Brien said. "I think they ran out of a little gas." Shammond Williams and Eric Williams scored 14 points apiece for the Celtics, who shot 47 percent (36-of-76) - including 17-of-32 from 3-point range - and suffered their fourth loss in five games.
