Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Just when the Milwaukee Bucks' defense 
couldn't get any worse, Matt Harpring and Karl Malone proved it
could.

Harpring and Malone combined for 33 points in the third quarter
as the Utah Jazz snapped a five-game skid against the Bucks by
holding on for a 118-115 victory.

Utah shot 56 percent (20-of-36) in the first half for a 55-51
lead as Andrei Kirilenko scored 16 of his 21 points.  Malone fed
Harpring for a three-point play to trigger an 11-2 run to start
the second half for a 66-53 cushion.

Harpring pumped in 18 of his 20 points in the period and Malone
added 15 of his 19 as Utah shot 64 percent (14-of-22). Malone's
three-point play with 99 seconds left gave the Jazz their
largest lead at 92-71.

"I think in the third quarter we were doubling (on defense) and
doing things like that," Malone said. "We ran the offense
through me every time down and ended up with some layups."

"Three-point plays kill you, that is what killed them in the
third quarter," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said.

Utah's 41 points in the third was a season high in a quarter and
the most allowed by Milwaukee in any period this season.

"The third quarter killed us," Bucks guard Sam Cassell said. "We
gave up 41 points and you can't let any team score that much in
a quarter and expect to win."

Milwaukee used a huge run in the fourth quarter to get within
114-110 on a three-point play by Michael Redd with 81 seconds
left.

Utah's Calbert Cheaney missed a 3-pointer, but Malone pulled
down the rebound. The Jazz worked the shot clock down again
before Mark Jackson drilled a 3-pointer with 35 seconds
remaining.

"I turned the same shot down about 10 seconds earlier, but
fortunately I got it back and had the confidence to knock it
down," Jackson said.

The Jazz, who have won three straight, placed five players in
double figures in their highest-scoring game of the year.  John
Stockton scored 20 points and Cheaney netted 13.

The Bucks saw a pair of players foul out as Utah was at the line
throughout the game. The Jazz did not take full advantage as
they shot 67 percent (31-of-46).  Malone and Kirilenko combined
to make just 9-of-17 attempts.

"We wanted to come out strong in the second half and not cough
up the lead," Stockton said. "We weren't knocking down free
throws, we couldn't seem to knock any down that would make us
comfortable."

Ray Allen, who missed the last game with ankle problems, led
Milwaukee with 29 points and Tim Thomas fouled out with 22.
Cassell scored 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting for the Bucks, who
committed 20 turnovers.

"It's an incredible stat sheet when you look at 20 turnovers, 20
offensive rebounds and 46 free throws and you still have an
opportunity to win the game," Bucks coach George Karl said. "We
played the clock hard, but we are probably the most fundamental
basketball team in the NBA."

A pair of free throws by Stockton gave Utah the lead for good at
43-41 with 4:19 remaining before halftime. Kirilenko dunked and
hit two free throws for a six-point edge.

Kirilenko's effect on the game was on both ends of the court as
he made 7-of-11 shots and also had six assists, six rebounds and
five steals.  Harpring and Malone each grabbed seven rebounds
as the Jazz held a 38-27 edge on the glass.

Milwaukee's slide continued with its 11th loss in 16 games. The
Bucks have allowed their last six opponents to break the century
mark.
