Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Chauncey Billups made five 3-pointers and Mehmet Okur and Chucky Atkins sparked a fourth-quarter surge with outside shooting to lead the Detroit Pistons to a 90-86 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. Billups shot 5-of-5 from 3-point range and led the Pistons with 21 points. He did most of his damage in the first half, when he hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points. Okur and Atkins each hit 3-pointers as part of a 12-4 run early in the final period that gave Detroit its largest lead at 78-68 lead. "Some people made some big shots tonight," Billups said. The Pistons shot 45 percent (9-of-20) from the arc. They came in shooting 37 percent from 3-point range, sixth in the NBA. Meanwhile, Atlanta was 1-of-13 from the arc. The Pistons never trailed in the second half but were unable to put away the Hawks as they shot just 13-of-20 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. "The important thing is that we found a way to get the win," Pistons coach Rick Carlisle said. "We could have made it a lot easier on ourselves, but the bottom line is that we got the win and you do what you have to do." Jason Terry twice brought Atlanta within three points, making a pair of free throws with 3:07 left and hitting a 3-pointer to 81-78 with 1:54 remaining. But the Hawks could get no closer as Richard Hamilton answered with two foul shots. "I told the team that I wish for them that we had won the game," Atlanta coach Terry Stotts said. "We've been working hard and that was a game that would have really helped us." Terry had 15 points and 12 assists but shot 5-of-18 from the field, including 1-of-7 from 3-point range. "Some nights, the ball just doesn't go in," Terry said. Pistons forward Ben Wallace collected 20 rebounds for the seventh time this season. "I'm looking to get every rebound I can," Wallace said. "That's what everybody looks for me to do. You expect scorers to score, so they expect me to clean the boards up. They depend on me to do that, and that's what I do." The Pistons have won 14 of their last 18 games against the Hawks, including two of three this season. Shareef Abdur-Rahim collected 20 points and 10 rebounds while Theo Ratliff added 10 and 11, but it was not enough to keep the Hawks from losing for the fifth time in six games.
