Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Despite missing superstar Chris Webber, the Sacramento Kings continued their mastery of the lowly Denver Nuggets. Mike Bibby scored 24 points and Peja Stojakovic added 14 and 10 rebounds as the Kings extended their winning streak against the Nuggets to seven games with an 87-76 victory. Sacramento was nursing a 46-42 halftime lead before opening the third quarter with a 15-2 run. Bibby scored eight points in the spurt, matching Denver's total for the entire period. The star point guard capped the outburst with a reverse layup that gave Sacramento a commanding 61-44 advantage midway through the period. "Everyone will be back eventually, and then we'll be back on pace," Bibby said. "Regardless of who is out, somebody always steps up. We're more than a one- or two-player team." Denver was held to fewer than 10 points in a quarter for the second time this season. The Nuggets recorded an NBA-record three in the first quarter at San Antonio on November 27. Kings shooting guard Doug Christie also lifted his game in Webber's absence, collecting 12 points, seven assists and seven steals. "We were off six days," Christie said. "We were a little slow at times, but through our defense we were able to get it done." Webber sat out due to pain in his left knee, but the Kings won for the third time in as many meetings with the Nuggets this season. Juwan Howard paced the Nuggets with 20 points and matched a season high with 15 rebounds and Rodney White contributed 18 points and matched his career high with eight boards off the bench. But Denver dropped its sixth straight at home and lost for the 11th time in 12 games overall. "The third quarter was a big breakdown for us," White said. "It did not seem like we had enough energy, especially in the third quarter. Without Webber, they are still very tough - the way they pass and cut to the basket." The Nuggets lost for the 15th time in 16 games this season when held to fewer this 80 points. "We cannot win without good guard play," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "We had 22 turnover tonight and Sacramento scored 26 points off those turnovers." Bibby hit on a jumper and finger roll as the Kings tallied the first nine points of the third period and took a 55-42 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining. "In the third quarter, I think both teams were trying to set a record for how fast they could get a shot off," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "I think we had 11 deflections and seven steals. We were playing great defense and, because we're not going offensively, we won with our defense." After Howard nailed a jumper, Christie fed Stojakovic for a driving dunk and Bibby got the next two baskets to make it 61-44.
