Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady and Latrell Sprewell dueled down the stretch and the NBA's top scorer prevailed, leading the Orlando Magic to a 103-100 victory over the New York Knicks. McGrady scored seven of his 28 points in the final three minutes, but it was Sprewell who had a chance to tie the game after McGrady could not get off a shot and Orlando committed a shot-clock violation with 14 seconds left. Sprewell, who had an open look at a potential game-tying 3-pointer in New York's loss to Portland on Sunday but never received the ball, missed a 19-foot jump shot from just off the top of the key to end the Knicks' hopes of overtime. "It was a wide open look, just a little bit too long," Sprewell said. "Both of us were just trying to win the game, trying to execute and doing what we could to win the game." Shandon Anderson missed a desperation heave from 70 feet after Mike Miller hit only 1-of-2 free throws with 2.2 seconds left. McGrady and Sprewell were the only players to hit baskets in the final 5:41. Sprewell hit a 3-pointer with 3:04 left to bring the Knicks into a 95-95 tie, but fouled McGrady at the other end to allow the Magic to regain the lead. After Sprewell hit a fadeaway jumper on the baseline with 2:07 left, McGrady put Orlando ahead to stay with a 3-pointer with 1:40 remaining. "When Tracy catches the ball, he demands attention," Knicks coach Don Chaney said. "You either have to be ready to double-team or ready to zone up." In the fourth quarter, McGrady scored 14 of his 28 points and Sprewell 10 of his 28. McGrady also tied a season high with nine assists before starting his scoring barrage. "The guy does a lot of things for the team," Miller said. "When he's not scoring, he's getting everybody else easy buckets. (You've) got to look at it and say that's why he's the MVP." Kurt Thomas scored 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting through the first three quarters but disappeared down the stretch due to foul trouble and seemed to lose his concentration after a physical confrontation with Magic center Andrew DeClercq early in the fourth. Thomas missed all four of his shots in the fourth quarter, including a turnaround jumper in the lane with 1:04 left when the Knicks were trailing 100-98 and Sprewell seemed to be open on the wing. "Going into training camp, we knew we were going to be undersized," Thomas said. "I just go out there and play my matchup. I don't back down from anyone." Miller scored 22 points, but like Thomas was derailed by foul trouble. The late free throw was Miller's only point after picking up his fourth personal foul with 8:11 left in the third quarter. "It really put us in the hole with Mike getting that fourth foul early," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. But the Knicks could not make the Magic pay for digging that hole and were outscored, 21-11, the rest of the third quarter. "I don't think we were coasting," Sprewell said. "When we got Miller in foul trouble, we should have put the dagger in them. When they put (Darrell) Armstrong in, we weren't getting good quality shots like we probably should have during that stretch." The Knicks led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter but allowed the Magic to take a 79-78 lead with a 14-2 spurt over the last 3:44 of the period. Orlando scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter on a jump shot by McGrady and 3-pointers from Armstrong and Pat Garrity. By the time Sprewell finally ended a run of nine straight misses by New York by following up Charlie Ward's wayward 3-point attempt with 9:11 left, it pulled the Knicks within 87-80. New York shot just 31 percent (9-of-29) in the second half after a 57 percent (25-of-44) performance before halftime. "I felt like I was busting my butt on the defensive end, trying to stop their key guys from scoring," McGrady said of the first half. "And when I was doing that and I was shutting those guys down, on the other side, guys were just ducking in, getting the easy baskets. It was real frustrating at times. I told them, 'I'm not going to bust my ass on the defensive end, you guys let other guys duck in and just get easy baskets. They're making us work for every basket we get.' So everybody just stepped up and took pride on the defensive end." Garrity scored 19 points and shot 5-of-10 from 3-point range. The Magic defeated the Knicks for the sixth straight time. Orlando won this season's first meeting, 87-85, in a game McGrady missed with a sprained ankle. Grant Hill, who had 16 points and 15 rebounds in the first meeting, missed his fifth straight contest with a sore left ankle. New York forward Clarence Weatherspoon sat out after undergoing oral surgery. "Honestly this morning, I thought (Hill) was playing," Rivers said. "Actually I think I would have lost a bet to some guys, because I basically said if I was a betting man, Grant would play tonight. Now we're back to the next game and we're hoping he'll play." The Knicks have lost the finale of all six of their back-to-back sets this year.
