Game StoryATLANTA (Ticker) -- Jason Kidd's sloppy play only helped lead to another sloppy loss for the Atlanta Hawks. Jason Kidd came within two turnovers of matching a dubious NBA record he already shares, but his carelessness did not matter as the Nets extended their winning streak to 10 games with a 101-94 victory over the reeling Hawks. Kidd committed 12 turnovers, two shy of the NBA record he shares with former Hawk John Drew. Kidd also tied Kevin Porter's 1977 franchise record for turnovers in a game. "I didn't break my record (14 turnovers in 2000 with Phoenix). When I break 16, that's a record," Kidd said. "I'll be in the record book of the New Jersey Nets now. You're going to have nights like that. You just hope it's not going to happen tonight. My teammates stuck with me and we won another game on the road." Kidd also found humor in his turnovers. "I thought I had only one," he joked. "Brett Favre and Mike Vick have days where they don't complete all their passes. They find other ways to win." Not all was bad for Kidd, who scored 21 points as the Nets moved within a win of matching their longest winning streak in franchise history, set during the 1982-83 campaign. "We got the victory. What we're trying to do this season each and every game is try to get better - try to strive for perfection," Nets coach Byron Scott said. And that's what I'm looking for. We didn't get it tonight, but we'll settle for the win." "We just have to keep it going like we have," Nets forward Kenyon Martin said. "We've been playing well at home, and we're playing well on the road now." Lucious Harris also netted 21 points for New Jersey, which has won five straight road games and sports the Eastern Conference's best record at 26-9. The Nets continued their surge at the expense of the Hawks, who once again looked lethargic in losing their fifth straight game. They are 1-5 under coach Terry Stotts, who replaced Lon Kruger on December 26. Atlanta scored the game's first two points for its only lead and trailed by as many as 19 before making a second-half run to make things interesting. Philips Arena also was once again empty with a crowd of 6,547 on hand to witness one of the NBA's most disappointing teams. "You can't get down 19 to the best team in the East," Stotts said. "The first half, we were lucky to be down 10. We didn't play the way you need to play in the first half." It was a debacle virtually the entire way for the Hawks, who committed more turnovers (seven) in the first quarter than made field goals (five). The Hawks finished with 21 turnovers - two fewer than the Nets - including seven by center Theo Ratliff. Even with all the sloppiness by both teams, the Nets were able to build a 39-23 lead early in the second quarter on a driving layup by Aaron Williams. The Nets held a 10-point lead at intermission behind 12 points from Harris. After the Hawks showed some life by scoring the first five points of the third quarter, the Nets responded with a 19-5 burst, taking their biggest lead at 69-50 on a free throw by Harris. The Hawks answered with their own 19-5 surge to close to 74-69 with 2:40 left in third quarter on a foul shot by Nazr Mohammed. Atlanta got as close as four points in the fourth quarter at 88-84 on a basket by Glenn Robinson. But Martin made a follow shot and Kidd hit 3-of-4 free throws for a nine-point advantage with under three minutes remaining. Martin got the best of his matchup with Shareef Abdur-Rahim, finishing with 17 points and 12 rebounds for his fifth straight double-double. Abdur-Rahim had 15 points and six rebounds. "It was a frustrating game," Abdur-Rahim said. "We have to keep at it, keep working hard. We need to be steadier and more together. We need to start games better, halves better, quarters better. We have to come out focused and ready to play." Richard Jefferson also added 17 points for the Nets, who shot 46 percent (34-of-74) and held a 39-36 rebounding advantage. New Jersey also made 31-of-42 free throws. Jason Terry netted 27 points and Robinson 23 for Atlanta, which shot 41 percent (32-of-78).
