Game StoryLOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- After mounting a huge run in the third quarter, the Memphis Grizzlies had little energy left in the fourth. Elton Brand scored a season-high 30 points and Lamar Odom added 23 as the Los Angeles Clippers held off a rally by the Grizzlies, who were handed a 103-95 loss in the opener of a six-game road trip. The game was a reversal of the last meeting between the teams on Friday, when Memphis squandered a 32-point lead before recovering in the fourth quarter en route to a 116-111 victory. On Wednesday, the Clippers had a 62-47 cushion with less than 10 minutes left in the third quarter before the Grizzlies responded with a 27-9 run to take the lead. "We played a little selfish in the third quarter," Los Angeles coach Alvin Gentry said. "Every time we play that way we get ourselves in deep, deep trouble. We can't afford to play that way." Shane Battier and rookie Gordan Giricek buried consecutive 3-pointers to start the burst and Pau Gasol scored the final eight points. Gasol buried a pair of free throws for a 74-71 edge with 69 seconds left, but Odom and Michael Olowokandi made consecutive baskets to close the quarter and give Los Angeles the lead for good. "I think we stepped up to meet them," Brand said. "The NBA is about runs. Guys hit shots and it really opened it up for us. It was a team effort. That's all we have to do to win."" The Clippers had a 79-78 edge less than two minutes into the fourth before Brand buried a short jumper to spark an 11-2 run. Corey Maggette scored seven straight points to end the spurt and give the Clippers a 90-80 advantage at the 7:37 mark. Memphis' Shane Battier responded with three free throws, but Odom made a runner and and Maggette buried two free throws for a 94-85 cushion with just 5:27 to go. Maggette and Brand each scored nine points in the fourth quarter as Los Angeles made 10-of-16 shots and 8-of-9 free throws. Andre Miller had 19 points and 14 assists and Maggette finished with 16 points and eight rebounds as the Clippers snapped a season-high seven-game losing streak. "We really needed to get this win," said Brand, who made 14-of-22 shots. "I wanted to come out and play hard. We kept a balanced attack and we finished up the game strong." "We needed anything positive to build on," Gentry said. "They have to understand that what got us this lead is what we have to keep doing. We have to continue to play and execute like we did tonight." Los Angeles shot 51 percent (41-of-81) from the floor and committed just eight turnovers. Memphis was held to 44 percent (37-of-84) and had 16 turnovers. Gasol had 23 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks to lead Memphis, which fell to 1-14 on the road. "We only had one road win so far so (the loss) is not going to kill any momentum," guard Shane Battier said. "We're just trying to find a rhythm on the road. This was a game we could've won, but we didn't make the plays down the stretch." Rookie Drew Gooden had 14 points and eight rebounds and Lorenzen Wright collected 10 and 10 as the Grizzlies held a commanding 50-25 advantage on the glass. Brand scored seven points in the first five minutes as the Clippers jumped to a 13-2 lead. Los Angeles had a 31-16 cushion after the first quarter and Memphis did not get closer than seven points until the third.
