Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Matt Harpring continued his stellar play with 31 points on 13-of-19 shooting as the Utah Jazz posted a 92-76 victory over the fading Miami Heat. Harpring, who is averaging 20.4 points in his last nine games, fell two shy of his season high set against Minnesota on November 29. "I'm getting used to finding the ball now," said Harpring, who also had seven rebounds, three steals and an assist. "It's fun playing with John (Stockton) and Karl (Malone). They make it easy on me because I'm getting better shots than I've ever had in my career." Malone added 19 points for the Jazz, who have won six of their last seven and improved to 11-3 when Harpring scores at least 20 points. Malone was just 3-of-10 from the field, but made 13-of-15 free throws. "I knew we could be a good team this year but it took us a while to jell because we had a lot of new guys come in," Harpring said. "We started out a little slow but now we have the right combinations on the court and we are better." Caron Butler scored 19 points and fellow rookie Rasual Butler added 18 for the Heat, who suffered their fifth straight loss. Again playing without injured leading scorer Eddie Jones, Miami scored 76 points for the second straight game and dropped to 0-4 on its five-game road trip. "We just couldn't get it together," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We gave up too many layups. They had 15 layups in the game. We just got off to a horrible start again." The Heat managed just 12 points in the first quarter and trailed by 14 entering the second period. They never recovered. "We show a lot of resolve and play as hard as we can, but we just make too many mistakes," Riley added. Miami opened the second half with a 16-5 spurt, cutting a 14-point halftime deficit to 56-53 on Caron Butler's layup with 6:37 left in the third period. "We got into a casual situation there at the end of the first half," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "We took about three or four bad shots that gave them a little momentum coming into the third quarter and they carried it right on through that." But the Jazz slowly rebuilt the margin into double figures and led by as many as 19 in the final two minutes. Miami managed just six points over the final seven minutes. The Heat, who used just eight players, had few answers for Utah's trademark pick-and-roll offense as the Jazz shot 51.5 percent (34-of-66) from the field. Miami finished at just under 38 percent (29-of-77). "They are one of the best cut teams in the league," Miami forward Brian Grant said. "It took some time to shut the cuts down. We made a run, we did in the third quarter, but then they just started it right up again." Harpring and Malone combined for more than 50 percent of Utah's offense as no other player scored more than eight points. "Every shot was contested and every rebound was fought for," Harpring said. "They made it tough for us, but our execution won it over for us." Grant added 16 points and rookie Sean Lampley added 13 off the bench for the Heat.
