Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets were staggered 24 
hours earlier, but the Toronto Raptors have been down and out
all season.

Jason Kidd scored 11 of his 25 points in a decisive second
quarter as the Nets rebounded from an embarrassing loss to post
a 94-79 victory over the hapless Raptors, who have dropped 12 in
a row.

New Jersey was routed by the Sacramento Kings, 118-82, on
Thursday, snapping a 10-game winning streak, one shy of a
franchise record.

"We answered one of the calls after the disappointing loss
yesterday," Kidd said. "We came out and got back on the winning
track and on top of that, we won on the road."

The Nets were not at their best against the Raptors, especially
in the first half, but still won comfortably.  Toronto again
played without leading scorer Vince Carter, who missed his 16th
straight contest with a strained right knee.

Carter took part in practice Thursday, giving the Raptors hope
that he would be able to return Friday, but he was a last-minute
scratch.

"It was a doctor's decision that he was not ready," Toronto
coach Lenny Wilkens said. "The guys were a little pumped because
they saw him practice, but we have to look out and make sure
he's really ready."

"We thought he was going to play," Raptors guard Morris Peterson
added. "He practiced well. I think some of the guys were a
little down."

Early on, the Nets appeared to be suffering the aftereffects of
their most lopsided setback in three years as Toronto opened a
15-9 midway through the first quarter.

"We're playing OK ball but by our standards, we're not playing
our best and that's what we strive to do every single game that
we step on the floor," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "We're
giving the effort, so I'm not so concerned now."

New Jersey took control midway through the second quarter and
never trailed thereafter. Kenyon Martin's jumper snapped a 36-36
tie with 5:52 left and ignited a 15-4 spurt that gave the Nets
a 51-40 halfime lead.

"Things can start snowballing, especially if they were to get
their confidence going and we were still having a hangover from
the night before," New Jersey forward Richard Jefferson said.
"Guys came out here with a tough attitude and just came out and
did what we needed to do."

New Jersey maintained a double-digit advantage for most of the
second half and led by as many as 17 in the final minute. Guard
Rafer Alston scored 17 points for the Raptors in his first game
since signing a 10-day contract on Wednesday.

"It was great," said Alston, a former draft pick of Milwaukee
who had been playing in the developmental league after being
released by Golden State in training camp.  "I'm coming in and
right away I'm playing the Eastern Conference champions. I was
shooting the ball well but I was lacking on defense.  That comes
from being away from the NBA for half a season."

The Nets tied a franchise record with their fifth straight win
away from home and moved to 9-8 on the road this season.

"We want to continue to play well on the road as we do at home,"
Kidd said.

Despite trailing by 11 at the half, the Raptors shot 53 percent
from the field, compared to 43 percent for the Nets. The
difference was on the boards as New Jersey outrebounded Toronto,
33-17.

That led to 15 more shots for the Nets, who were 20-of-47 from
the field. Toronto was 17-of-32 but cooled off dramatically in
the second half and finished at 46 perent (31-of-67).  New
Jersey shot 45 percent (34-of-76).

"We limited them to one shot when they did miss," Kidd said.
"They came out on fire."

"We had some good looks," Wilkens added. "I think guys start
pressing and then you don't make shots and there were a lot of
longs rebounds that they were able to pick up on us, too. After
that, we just couldn't get going."

Rodney Rogers and Kerry Kittles scored 13 points apiece off the
bench for the Nets. Martin contributed a double-double with 10
and 10 rebounds.

Antonio Davis scored 13 points and Alvin Williams added 12 for
the Raptors.

Toronto pulled within 75-65 on Alston's jumper with 7:33
remaining and had a chance to get closer, but Jelani McCoy
missed a pair from the line 19 seconds later.

New Jersey put away the game over the next 3 1/2 minutes,
opening an 87-71 cushion on Kittles' jumper with 3:45 to go.
