Game StoryATLANTA (Ticker) -- Dion Glover made sure the Atlanta Hawks would not have to wait any longer for back-to-back wins. Glover nailed a go-ahead 3-pointer with 41 seconds remaining to help lift the Hawks to an 87-80 triumph over the slumping New Orleans Hornets. Atlanta, which snapped a six-game losing streak against Houston on Friday, had not won two in a row since December 5-7. "We need to do this night after night after night before (we can say we've turned our season around)," said Hawks forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who led the team with 23 points and 10 rebounds. The Hawks were ahead 80-71 after a jumper by Abdur-Rahim with 6:50 remaining. But the Hornets shut them down and managed to tie it on a dunk and free throw by Robert Traylor with 1:50 left. Neither team scored until Glover, who totaled just five points, sank a 3-pointer over the outstretched arm of Jamal Mashburn with one second to go on the shot clock to give Atlanta an 83-80 lead. "I didn't feel it tonight," said Glover, who missed his first four attempts before the 3-pointer. "I just tried to get it up, to put it up high to at least give us an offensive rebound attempt. That's why I cut the tape off of my wrists, I was ready to shoot it." "Dion is an offensive player," Hawks coach Terry Stotts said. "I had him in for that reason. We were being bogged down offesively ... I thought Glove gave us some more weakside options offensively." After Traylor missed a baseline jumper with 26 seconds left, Jason Terry was fouled and made two free throws with 16 seconds to play. Abdur-Rahim capped the scoring with two from the line with nine seconds remaining. "It came at the right time (for Atlanta)," Mashburn said of Glover's shot. "He hit a step-back 3-point shot. That's part of basketball. He made a good shot. Any night, anytbody can hit a shot in this league." Terry and rookie Mike Wilks scored 13 points apiece for the Hawks, who played a second straight game without Glenn Robinson. The star forward is nursing an irritated right elbow. David Wesley scored 22 points and Mashburn 16 for New Orleans, which has lost four straight and nine of its last 11 games. The Hornets played their sixth consecutive contest without point guard Baron Davis, who has back spasms. "You gotta play with the players who are out there," Mashburn said. "There's no telling how the game would have been with Baron or Glenn Robinson. It's just one of those nights. If we would've been at home, we probably would have won." Atlanta shot 47 percent (32-of-68) and limited New Orleans to 35 percent (29-of-83). The Hawks also outrebounded the Hornets, 45-35. "Defense is not a secret, you've got to win with defense," Terry said. "It starts with defense. Offensively, we know we can get what we want. We needed that one bad, (even though) it was a real ugly game." "Both teams were a little fatigued (after playing on Friday), but it was another good, solid game from beginning to end," Stotts said. "Their zone in the fourth quarter probably was a factor. It was effective." The Hawks led, 22-20, after one quarter and took a 49-43 edge into halftime. Atlanta extended the advantage to 69-61 entering the fourth quarter after leading by as many as 13 points in the third period. Atlanta took its biggest fourth-quarter lead, 80-71, on Abdur-Rahim's jumper with 6:50 left before New Orleans made its late run. "That's the way our luck's going right now," Wesley said. "It's going to take a game where we really beat somebody, not just by two or three points. Somebody on the other team always comes up and hits the shots. We need something to turn the stuff around."
