Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Kobe Bryant scored 36 points as the Los Angeles Lakers extended their winning streak to a season-high four games with an easy 106-81 victory over the lowly Miami Heat. Bryant topped 30 points for the 12th time and had his way all night against Miami, shooting 12-of-21 from the field. "It's significant because of the way we have been playing pretty good," Bryant said. "We have (been) beating them pretty well to the point we can rest in the fourth quarter and put ice on our knees. We are playing pretty well." Although the Lakers are in the midst of their best stretch of the season, coach Phil Jackson is not ready to say they have completed a turnaround due to the opponents and a defensive effort that allowed the Heat to shoot 53 percent (19-of-36) in the first half. "Well you have to take into consideration, we have been playing at home and playing under-.500 ballclubs," he said. "That has helped us get some momentum and now that we have it, we have to establish it and continue to use it." Overall, the Lakers (17-20) have won six of seven are three games under .500 for the first time since November 15, when they were 3-6. The Heat hung around in the first half and were within 67-59 following Mike James' 3-pointer with 5:44 remaining. But the Lakers closed out the third quarter on a 13-1 run and took an 80-61 advantage into the fourth quarter. Reserve Devean George started the deciding spurt with a 14-foot jumper and Samaki Walker followed with a thunderous dunk to put the Lakers up by double digits for good. In the decisive third period, the Lakers shot 11-of-17, while Miami made just 5-of-19 shots. "They were the Lakers in the third quarter," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We had no answer for them. We played very well in the first half. We had guys step up, but in the third quarter it went right out the window." "We were playing well offensively, but defensively we didn't do a good job," Bryant said. "In the second half, we were able to tighten up our screws defensively and we were able to hold them down." Five days after establishing a NBA record with 12 3-pointers, Bryant's big night helped offset a quiet night by superstar center Shaquille O'Neal, who finished with 15 points. O'Neal shot 5-of-13 from the field in 34 minutes and battled through foul trouble but held Miami center Brian Grant to six points. "He had to expend more energy on defense in this game then he did offensively because that was what was important for us," Jackson said. "They took it right to him and he got in foul trouble." "They were doubling and tripling me all night, so I was kicking it out to my guys and guys hit their open shots," O'Neal said. The Lakers posted their most lopsided loss of the season and shot 51 percent (40-of-78). Rookie Caron Butler scored 23 points for the Heat, whose losing streak reached a season-high six games. Butler made 8-of-14 shots in 40 minutes. But he was limited to four points after halftime after making six of his first seven shots. "I didn't see any adjustments," said Butler about the third quarter. "I just saw the same thing and I wasn't being as aggressive as I could have been. I was trying to kick the ball out and make plays, but unfortunately the ball didn't drop." Butler was 5-for-5 in the second quarter and scored eight of Miami's final 11 points in the first half to forge a 50-50 tie at halftime. Fellow rookie Rasual Butler added 16 points and James chipped in 14 for the Heat, who committed 21 turnovers.
