Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Rookie Gordan Giricek scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half, including a layup with one second left that gave the Memphis Grizzlies a 110-108 victory over the Golden State Warriors. Pau Gasol added 23 points but missed the second of two free throws that would have given Memphis a 109-106 lead. Golden State's Gilbert Arenas grabbed the rebound and feed Antawn Jamison, whose layup forged a 108-108 deadlock with four seconds to play. After a Grizzlies' timeout, Bob Sura slipped while guarding Giricek, allowing the 25-year-old Croatian to convert the winning basket. "It surprised me that he (Giricek) was open," said Gasol, who had 12 rebounds for his fourth straight double-double. "It wasn't supposed to be the play, but he was wide open right under the basket and I just gave him the ball." "Bobby went for the steal and slipped and they had an open layup," Warriors coach Eric Musselman said. "They were trying to get the ball in and it was close to a 4 1/2-second count. If Bobby doesn't slip, we might get a five-second call. It's just one of those things." Lorenzen Wright contributed 16 points and 15 rebounds as Memphis snapped a five-game road losing streak and improved to 1-3 on a season-high six-game trip. The Grizzlies are just 2-15 away from home. "It's always good to win on the road - or at home," Giricek said. "We'll treat it like a regular win. We hope we can get some more wins on this road trip. We play two more games on this trip against Seattle and Portland." Referring to his second-half performance, the rookie guard said, "I need to play the first half like that, but I didn't play well the first half because one mistake ... I'm on the bench. I couldn't catch rhythm, which is why I didn't play the first half good, but the second half I warmed up pretty well and I made a lot of shots. (The team) started to believe in me." "We were not pleased with Gordon in the first half," Memphis coach Hubie Brown said. "(Jason) Richardson was just blowing by him, getting on the boards and they were going to him." Brown made a few switches that got Giricek going. "We do that if he's not defending and he's getting overrun by a guy. We'll move (Shane) Battier in the backcourt and bring (Drew) Gooden," he explained. "So we do that every night. What you saw in the second half, he's very capable of doing. But Gordon is a great streak shooter on a roll." Gilbert Arenas scored a season-high 31 points, Jamison chipped in 20 and Troy Murphy collected 16 and a career-high 20 rebounds, but the Warriors had a three-game home winning streak stopped. "This shouldn't faze us at all," Jamison said. "We didn't come out and play with the type of energy that we need to do and we just got to put it behind us and get ready for Wednesday. I don't think we can take too many things from this game, except we didn't start off the way we needed to." Jason Williams found Gooden for an alley-oop layup with less than a second left in the second quarter to send Memphis into halftime with a 58-56 lead. The Grizzlies started the third quarter with a 14-3 run, taking their largest lead, 72-59, on a pair of free throws by Giricek with 8:20 left. Golden State answered with a 13-4 spurt and climbed within four points on two free throws by Arenas. But Memphis pushed the margin to 87-77 when Giricek hit a running jumper with 49 seconds left in the period. "We didn't execute (in the beginning of the third quarter) and that put us in a hole," Arenas said. "We just didn't come out in the third, after halftime, to compete. They came out after they hit that (shot before halftime) and were energized, and we didn't respond to it." In the fourth quarter, Murphy forged a 91-91 tie by hitting the second of two free throws with 7:38 left. But the Grizzlies went on a 13-5 run for a 104-96 lead with 42 seconds remaining. The Warriors replied with 12 of the next 16 points, capped by Jamison's driving layup that tied it. "We have played so many close games on the road and we've lost a lot of them in the last three minutes," Brown said. "This trip has been tough for us because the Clipper game came down to the last 30 seconds, the Phoenix game was a three-point game with 20 seconds and then the game (Sunday), we were down six points in Sacramento and we had a shot. So for us, it's a monumental win because we've had a monkey on our back." Gooden scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds in his hometown. He is averaging 14 points and 7.3 rebounds vs. Golden State. "It feels good to come back for the first time in the Bay Area and get a win," said Gooden, who played high school ball in nearby El Cerrito. Williams added 13 points for the Grizzlies, who shot 48 percent (41-of-86) from the field and connected on 26-of-30 free throws. Sura collected 14 points and Earl Boykins tied a season high with eight assists for Golden State, which shot 40 percent (37-of-92) but had a 54-49 rebounding edge.
