Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Bulls still are learning how to finish. Jalen Rose scored 28 points and Tyson Chandler had a career-high 19 rebounds as the Bulls nearly squandered a 20-point lead before holding on for a 101-94 win over the New York Knicks. "Seemingly every game is a lesson," said Chicago coach Bill Cartwright, whose team lost in overtime at Milwaukee on Friday. "This is a game where we hoped we would learn following the Milwaukee game. We need to be poised, not to panic and know our defensive assignment." Marcus Fizer added 14 points for the Bulls, including seven in a key 14-4 run that gave them an 86-70 lead with 7:36 left. Chicago extended the advantage to 94-74 on a basket by Fizer with four left before the Knicks finally woke up. New York went on a 20-5 run and cut the deficit to 99-94 on a 3-pointer by Latrell Sprewell with 30 seconds left. But the Knicks got no closer as Jamal Crawford sank a pair of free throws for the final margin. "Give them credit. Don't give them all the credit, though," Knicks coach Don Chaney said. "We didn't play our best game, either. They have the size and skill, but the only negative is that they're very young. We played as if we had played last night. We didn't have any energy." Sprewell scored eight of his 17 points in the fourth quarter but made just 7-of-22 shots. New York shot 39 percent (37-of-96). The Knicks have lost five of their last six games and Monday was the first during that span that was not decided in the final 10 seconds. Allan Houston had 25 points and Kurt Thomas added 19 and 12 rebounds for New York, which hosts Chicago on Tuesday. "They played a lot harder than we did," Thomas said. "Chandler had a great game. A guy almost gets 20 rebounds, it's really hard to stop him." Chandler added eight points and three assists for the Bulls, who ended a two-game slide. "If your shots aren't falling, you can always get rebounds," Chandler said. "I'm sure they will box me out more tomorrow night, but hopefully I can continue and get some more and score a few points." Bulls rookie Jay Williams, who missed three of the previous four games with a sprained left ankle, scored eight points in 29 minutes. Rose had a 3-pointer to cap a 7-0 spurt that gave Chicago a 76-66 lead. The Bulls soon built the lead to 20 points on a driving layup by Eddie Robinson and jumpers by Rose and Fizer before the Knicks rallied. "This game was really about improvement," Rose said. "We stepped it up and got it done. We didn't close it out like the way we are capable." The Knicks got back into the game by making six of their nine 3-pointers in the final period, including two each by Sprewell and Charlie Ward. Chandler had seven of rebounds in the first quarter, helping the Bulls to an 18-17 lead. Chicago built a 10-point lead in the second period, with Rose sinking a pair of free throws to make it 39-29. The Knicks cut it to 47-43 at halftime on a 3-pointer by Houston with 13 seconds left. Chicago built a 10-point lead late in the third quarter on a rebound and dunk by Chandler. It was the Bulls' third straight win over New York.
