Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Seattle SuperSonics are remembering what it takes to win while the Dallas Mavericks are being reminded what it is like to lose. Rashard Lewis scored four of his 19 points in the final 43 seconds and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Sonics posted an 85-81 victory over the Mavericks, who have lost three in a row for the first time this season. The Sonics won eight of their first 10 games this season before losing 19 of the next 27. They lost a season-high six straight before Friday's overtime win over Memphis and used stifling defense to shut down the slumping Mavericks. "It was a solid effort both defensively and on the offensive end of the floor," Sonics coach Nate McMillan said. "These guys came out and played a 48-minute game and beat the best team in the league." "We've still go to take it one day at a time," Seattle guard Kenny Anderson said. "We won two in a row and that's good, but we know how it felt to lose six in a row, so we've just got to keep getting better." Dallas opened the season with 14 straight victories and has not relinquished the league's best record. But the Mavs are in the midst of their first losing streak since last February. "Throughout the NBA season you got 82 games and there is going to be some hard times," said Mavs guard Nick Van Exel, who scored 14 points off the bench. "It's all how we come out of it. Right now we aren't looking too good, but we have to man up and get tough and fight through it." Dallas had a 66-61 lead after the third quarter but managed only 15 points on 6-of-18 shooting in the fourth. "Our offense went cold at the wrong time," Mavs coach Don Nelson said. "In the fourth quarter we just couldn't seem to make a shot. We're struggling a little bit right now as much offensively as defensively." Seattle opened the final period with a 7-2 run, highlighted by five points from Predrag Drobnjak, who completed a three-point play to forge a 68-68 tie at the 8:14 mark. Anderson made consecutive jumpers to give the Sonics an 81-76 edge with 1:49 to go. Michael Finley responded with consecutive baskets for the Mavs, burying a 3-pointer for an 81-81 tie with 63 seconds left. Lewis responded with a fallaway jumper and buried two clutch free throws with 10 seconds to play as the Sonics snapped a four-game slide to the Mavs. Drobnjak finished with 19 points and Anderson had 13 and seven assists off the bench for Seattle, which had a 41-35 rebounding advantage and dished out 27 assists to just 14 for Dallas. "The movement of the ball and the movement of the guys out on the floor allowed us to get opportunities," McMillan said. "We had 27 assists, which we haven't had in a while. It was just a solid effort." But the key was the Sonics' defense, which held the league's highest-scoring team to just 38 percent shooting (30-of-79). The Mavs were held under 90 points for just the fifth time in 39 games. Finley finished with 16 points and Dirk Nowitzki added 15, 14 rebounds and six assists for Dallas, which managed only 37 points in the second half. The Sonics went on a 19-6 run midway through the second quarter, led by Barry, who buried three 3-pointers during the stretch. He sank a shot from the arc with 3:41 to go to give Seattle its largest lead at 42-32. The Mavericks closed the first half with 10 straight points as the Sonics were held scoreless for the final 3:06. Steve Nash, who scored 14 points, capped the second quarter with a three-point play for a 44-44 halftime tie.
