Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- With Grant Hill and Vince Carter on the sidelines, Tracy McGrady was more than willing to grab the spotlight. McGrady overcame a shaky start and scored 35 points to lead the Orlando Magic to a 101-93 victory over the his former team, the struggling Toronto Raptors. Entering the contest averaging an NBA-best 29.9 points per game, McGrady missed six of his first seven shots. But the 6-8 All-Star scored 11 points in the second quarter and the Magic took a 55-46 lead at halftime that was never relinquished. McGrady also just missed his first triple-double of the season, grabbing 11 rebounds and handing out eight assists as Orlando avenged a 115-109 home loss to the Raptors on November 12 and won for just the second time in its last six games. Hearing boos throughout from the sellout crowd of 19,800, McGrady played all but one minute and made 14-of-31 shots. Entering the season, McGrady averaged 23.1 points in seven games against Toronto. He scored 38 points in the November loss to the Raptors. "Thank you for booing me, you are doing me a favor really, because when they boo me like that it, just gives me more motivation to play," McGrady said. "I enjoy the challenge and I enjoy the boos. Keep on booing me every time I come back. Please, please, Toronto, please keep doing it." Since McGrady was acquired in a sign-and-trade deal in August 2000, the Magic have won six of nine meetings with the Raptors. Morris Peterson scored 25 points and Antonio Davis added 21 and seven rebounds for Toronto, which dressed just eight players and lost for the 15th time in 17 games. "I thought in that third quarter we got off to a slow start," Peterson said. "I think that really cost us the game. A team with a guy like Tracy McGrady, you have to take advantage, and we didn't take advantage in the third. It was a pretty long game. Tracy McGrady is a great player." Carter missed that November meeting in Orlando and has sat out 31 times this season. Leading Eastern Conference players in votes for the All-Star Game, Carter has a bad knee. Raptors guard Lindsey Hunter also has been bothered by a sore right hamstring. He made just 3-of-13 shots. "We wanted to come out with a whole lot of energy," Toronto coach Lenny Wilkens said. "You know, for some reason, we couldn't get that energy. In the second half, we had some more of it and had we had it. Who knows what happens. We really did a good job of trapping and making guys put the ball on the floor." Orlando placed the oft-injured Hill on the injured list Saturday and also was without forward Mike Miller, who has a right ankle injury. But McGrady, Pat Garrity and Darrell Armstrong made up for their absence by combining to hit 7-of-12 3-pointers. Orlando was just 3-of-14 from behind the arc in the previous loss to Toronto. "I don't feel no pressure," McGrady said. "When guys go down, I step up and elevate my game and try to make these guys better by moving the ball, putting them in situations where they feel comfortable. "I think I did a great job of that. I tell the guys to keep shooting and I try to be a leader out on the basketball court when guys like Grant and Mike are out." Jacque Vaughn benefitted from Orlando's injuries as he started and played 45 minutes. Vaughn, who was averaging under 18 minutes per game, made 7-of-12 shots and was one of five players in double figures for Orlando with 15 points. Garrity opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer and Jeryl Sasser had a follow shot to push Orlando's lead to 60-46. The Raptors used a 6-0 spurt to close within 64-56 on a 19-footer by Alvin Williams with 7:26 left in the third. But Orlando used an 8-2 surge to grab its biggest lead, 85-68, on a baseline jumper by McGrady with 73 seconds remaining in the third. Williams made two free throws as Toronto scored seven straight points to pull within, 87-77, with 8:45 left. McGrady answered with an 18-footer, but Toronto managed to close within 98-93 on a pair of free throws by Williams with 1:34 to go. Each team missed jumpers on its next possession, and Armstrong made two free throws after graabing an offensive rebound to put Orlando ahead, 100-93, with 31 seconds left. "We built a nice comfortable lead and we hung in there," Armstrong said. "We knew they were going to make a run at some point and they played well in the fourth quarter to get back in the game. Tracy knocked down shots all night long."
