Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Although few were there to witness it, the Chicago Bulls halted a 19-game road losing streak as Jalen Rose matched his season high with 37 points in a 115-102 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. Rose hit a career-high seven 3-pointers as Chicago won for the first time on the road since a season-opening victory at Boston on October 30. Rose made 15-of-21 shots, including 7-of-10 from beyond the arc, where the Bulls were 10-of-17. He scored 30 points in Saturday's double-overtime loss at Miami and has led Chicago the last six games. When asked if he ever shot that well, Rose responded, "In college or high school, not in the pros. The pros is a different animal. It was just a great night for me shooting the ball. Guys did a great job of finding me. They set picks for me and that made me feel great. The rhythm just came." Rose, Marcus Fizer and Rick Brunson combined for 39 points in the fourth quarter, when the Bulls made 16-of-18 shots and outscored the Hawks, 41-19, to erase a nine-point deficit. Rose had a chance to eclipse his season high, but missed two free throws with 35 seconds remaining. He also scored 37 points in a 111-101 loss at Cleveland on December 4. The only other Bull to score in the fourth was Eddie Robinson, who drew cheers from the sparse crowd at Philips Arena when he threw down a powerful dunk with 10 seconds to play for the final margin. "We shot great in that fourth quarter," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "Jalen was huge, Marcus was really good. We were lucky we had the right guys in there at the time. We're just trying to get a little bit better every day. This was an easy game for us to lose. We came in here late, we could've come in here flat, but we didn't. We battled." Fizer had 24 points and 10 rebounds in 27 minutes and fellow reserve Brunson scored all 12 of his points in the final 12 minutes. Activated prior to the game when rookie point guard Jay Williams went on the injured list, Brunson made 5-of-7 shots and handed out seven assists in his season debut. The 30-year-old Brunson signed with the Bulls on September 18 after spending last season with Portland. "I surprised myself as far as shooting," Brunson said. "I knew I could cause havoc on the defensive end, when I started hitting I knew I was feeling all right. We lost like 19, I thought this was our game to get. It was early and they may not have been up for us. I was excited I knew I wanted to play. I think our starters wore them down and we finished them off." Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 25 points and Jason Terry added 23 and seven assists for Atlanta, which has lost five straight and 11 of 13. "We just let up," Abdur-Rahim said. "We made it hard on ourselves. When you're up 10 or 11 at the start of the fourth (and you end up losing) you make it hard on yourself. I don't know what to say." The crowd at Philips Arena for the noon EST start appeared even smaller than the announced total of 9,661. Glenn Robinson contributed 20 points and eight rebounds but made just 6-of-16 shots for the Hawks. "We should've put them away," Terry said. "You have to give them credit, they were on the road, they were hitting shots from the telephone booth." Atlanta still had a nine-point lead after after Nazr Mohammed made a short hook with 10:15 to play. But Brunson responded with a jumper in the lane 18 seconds later to trigger a 10-0 burst that Fizer capped with a 12-footer for an 89-88 edge with 8:11 left. Terry hit a 3-pointer to give the Hawks a 91-89 edge with 7:52 left. The Bulls took the lead for good when Brunson nailed a 3-pointer from the left baseline to make it 100-97 with 4:31 left. After Terry missed a 3-pointer, Fizer hit a short jumper and Rose followed a miss by Abdur-Rahim with a 3-pointer to push the lead to 105-97 with 3:16 remaining.
