Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- A little more than a day after slicing the umbilical cord connecting his wife and first child, Kobe Bryant helped the Los Angeles Lakers cut down the Los Angeles Clippers. Bryant scored 26 points and narrowly missed a triple-double and Shaquille O'Neal netted 32 as the Lakers defeated the Clippers, 96-92, for their sixth straight home victory. After Michael Olowokandi's bucket with 4:50 to go gave the Clippers an 82-77 advantage, the Lakers reeled off 10 straight points, taking an 87-82 advantage on Derek Fisher's bucket with 1:49 left. Rick Fox, who missed six of his first seven shots, knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the decisive burst. "I didn't think the 1-for-7 was indicative of how I'd been shooting the ball lately," Fox said. "So it made it very easy to shoot the last two. You just have to stay with it." Bryant went 9-of-9 from the foul line, including four free throws in the final 18 seconds. He dished out 11 assists, grabbed eight rebounds and collected three steals. The 24-year-old's first child, Natalia, was born Sunday afternoon. "We were able to get his game under our belt and now we move on to Golden State," said Bryant, who was bothered by tendinitis in his knee. "You have to give them credit, they just keep on coming." Andre Miller scored 20 points for the Clippers, including a three-point play with 15 seconds left that cut the deficit to 94-92. But after a giveaway by Robert Horry, the Clippers returned the favor when Corey Maggette was called for an offensive foul. "You talk to the ref, I don't want to talk about it," Maggette said of his charge. "I don't want to say nothing. Call a charge with three seconds left? You have to ask the ref." Although both teams play their home games in the Staples Center, the Lakers were the home team in this one. "They've won three championships, they're the best in the league," Olowokandi said. "They're the best in the league, regardless of what their record is." Fisher was the only other Laker in double figures with 12 points as the Lakers got just 12 points from their bench. Samaki Walker pulled down 15 boards for the Lakers, who held a 53-42 rebounding edge but committed 22 turnovers and shot just 42.5 percent (34-of-80) from the floor. "We really didn't shoot that well, I think we took those guys a little too lightly," O'Neal said. "We still had guts to win at the end." Despite having five scorers in double figures, the Clippers were less accurate from the floor at just 40 percent (35-of-88). The game was close throughout. The Lakers held a 26-24 lead after one period, but by halftime, the teams were knotted at 45-45. O'Neal had 18 points and eight boards at the break. Olowakandi, who fouled out with 15 points, netted 12. The Clippers built a 50-45 third-quarter bulge on a 15-footer by Miller, a foul shot by Olowokandi and a pair of free throws by Maggette, but the Lakers surged ahead with a 9-0 run. Maggette scored 18 points and Elton Brand had 11 and 12 rebounds for the Clippers, who beat Sacramento on Saturday but have lost three of their last four games. O'Neal scored the last five points in the burst, including a three-point play that gave the Lakers a 54-50 lead with 7:20 left. The Lakers shot 7-of-12 from 3-point range in winning for the seventh time in nine games.
