Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Miami Heat had folded numerous times down the stretch this season. Not this time. Brian Grant scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Eddie James added 15 points as the Heat held off the Phoenix Suns, 92-85. "(Grant) brings it every night," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "I've always felt that he is one of the best defensive big men in the league, not only in the conference. He's a little bit undersized against the big 7-foot centers, but in schemes, in post defense and just being aware, he's great." "Brian Grant was just an animal again to us," said Suns coach Frank Johnson, whose team lost to the Heat at home on December 2. "He was sealing us in." The Heat, who were opening a four-game homestand, had lost eight of 10 but used tough defense to take a 71-60 advantage into the fourth quarter. The Suns stormed back, opening the quarter on a 14-3 run to tie it, 74-74, on a jumper by Jake Voskuhl with 8:20 remaining. But just when Miami looked like it would wilt, LaPhonso Ellis nailed a turnaround jumper with 7:57 to give the Heat the lead for good and start a 6-0 run. The Suns got within 82-81 on a layup by Stephon Marbury with 2:50 left, but Grant countered with a pair of free throws 20 seconds later, and Phoenix got no closer than two points thereafter. "When it got a little bit hairy in the fourth quarter, we made some shots and finished it," Riley said. "It was a great win. The guys played really hard." "We have a lot of poise in our game right now," said Heat rookie Caron Butler, who scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds. "We are finding our identity and we are learning how to close games." James, Eddie House and Butler each made a pair of free throws in the final 20 seconds to ice the game for the Heat, who shot 20-of-21 from the line. "Everyone just stepped up tonight," House said. "We were getting the same looks all year and tonight they dropped. We need to continue to grow and try to pull our wins like this." Shawn Marion scored 27 points, Marbury added 18 and Joe Johnson 15 for the Suns, who lost for the fourth time in five games. "We just didn't do what we were supposed to do," Marion said. "We should never have been in this situation. If we had played the first half like we played in the second half, we would have won or put ourselves in a position to win." Miami led, 26-21, after one quarter and extended its advantage to as many as 13 points in the second quarter before taking a 53-43 edge into the half. "We gave up 50 points at halftime and they shot 50 percent," Frank Johnson said. "That was very disappointing. It always takes us being down for us to play with any sense of urgency." "For three quarters they played harder than us," Marbury said. "You can't play that way against a team like that. That is what they do, they pride themselves in playing hard."
