Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- After missing a crucial free throw that led to the first overtime, Bonzi Wells made sure that there wouldn't be a third extra period. Wells sank a driving layup with 1.6 seconds left in the second overtime to lift the Portland Trail Blazers to a 112-110 victory over the reeling Atlanta Hawks. With the score tied, 110-110, the Trail Blazers inbounded the ball with 18 seconds to go and got it to Wells at the top of the key. Isolated on defender Corey Benjamin, who was signed earlier in the day, Wells dribbled the clock down to about six seconds before driving past Benjamin and kissing the ball high off the glass and in. "I guess coach thought I couldn't do anything worse," Wells said of getting the final play. "I was able to hit the big one. That's probably the best shot I've hit since I came into the league. It was a tough shooting night, but luckily I got the big one." "Unbelievable game," Trail Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks said. "We won, lost, won, lost, won, lost. Don't know how you can explain it, a heckuva game." Derek Anderson scored 21 points and Wells, who missed a free throw with 1.2 seconds left in regulation with the score tied at 96-96, finished with 12 on 5-of-22 shooting. Atlanta forced a second overtime in unlikely fashion. Trailing 104-101 with 3.2 seconds left, Shareef Abdur-Rahim hit one free throw, then purposely missed the second. Benjamin collected the rebound and beat the buzzer with a short jumper. "I was just persistent to get the rebound. I wanted it," Benjamin said. "I started from behind the free throw line and ran in. I was aggressive, I'm hungry, I'm trying to do whatever I can do to be around here." Abdur-Rahim finished with 27 points and 11 rebounds and Jason Terry added 23 and 11 assists for the Hawks, who dropped their sixth straight game. "I guess you saw a pretty good basketball game," Atlanta coach Terry Stotts said. "I think we took care of the ball and kept it simple. We didn't give in to it. A lot games I've coached this team, we've come back and fought. We just haven't been rewarded with a win." After falling behind, 62-49, the Hawks used a 14-0 run to soar into the lead. Glenn Robinson had five points in the burst, which concluded with Abdur-Rahim's lay-in with 5:54 remaining in the third period. Robinson picked up two quick technicals for arguing 48 seconds later and was ejected with 17 points. The lead changed hands four times before Atlanta gained control for the rest of the quarter and took a 73-70 advantage into the fourth. With 1:59 to go, Atlanta took its biggest lead at 94-89 on Dion Glover's basket. But Dale Davis hit two free throws, Anderson sank a nine-footer with 62 seconds to play and Wells hit a layup to give Portland a 95-94 lead with 35 seconds to go. After a miss by Glover, Anderson went to the foul line with 14 seconds left and missed both. Down at the other end, Benjamin sank a layup with four seconds left to put Atlanta on top. Portland did not call a timeout. Instead, Wells took the inbounds and rushed down the floor, where he was fouled by Theo Ratliff. He misfired on the first free throw before making the second to send it in to overtime. "That was an awful lot of effort," Davis said. "We played hard, I just tried to control the boards. It was a bang-bang game. It seemed like everything counted. That was a great game for the fans to see." Zach Randolph scored 20 points, Scottie Pippen 15 and Davis grabbed 17 rebounds as Portland improved to 2-1 without Rasheed Wallace, who is serving a seven-game suspension for accosting and threatening a referee. Glover netted a season-high 21 points and career highs of three blocks and 52 minutes. Benjamin scored eight points and had a career-best eight rebounds for Atlanta, which shot 40 percent (39-of-97). The Hawks suffered their 12th loss in 14 games and fell to 2-2 in overtime. Portland is 3-1 in overtime.
