Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Michael Jordan's night turned into Marcus Fizer's fourth quarter. Fizer scored 17 of his 18 points in the final period to pace the Chicago Bulls to a 104-97 victory over the Washington Wizards in what likely was Jordan's final game at the United Center. In a pregame ceremony, Jordan received a four-minute standing ovation from the sellout crowd of 23,215. During a break midway through the first quarter, a three-minute highlight reel of Jordan's 13-year career with the Bulls played on the giant screen. "It was very touching," said Jordan, who led the Bulls to six NBA titles. "I'm a Chicagoan. I play for the Wizards and I do everything I can to help them win, but I always look to see how the Bulls are doing when our game is finished. "I don't care what anyone says, I know this is it," said Jordan, who has twice come out of retirement. "You might think I'm coming back, some people might want me to come back, but this is it. I've enjoyed the run but I know my playing days will be over after this season." Jordan played 40 minutes and finished with 11 points on 4-of-14 shooting. His two free throws with 1:46 left pulled the Wizards within 97-95, but Fizer answered with a layup and Jerry Stackhouse missed a 3-pointer at the other end. Donyell Marshall sank 1-of-2 from the foul line with 28 seconds left, then hit two free throws seven seconds later to extend the lead to 102-95. The win was the fourth in a row at home for the Bulls, who completed a 1-4 road trip in Orlando on Wednesday. Washington lost for the third time in four games. Fizer shot 8-for-13 in 20 minutes to lead an overwhelming bench effort. The Bulls' reserves outscored the Wizards' subs by a 55-22 margin. Eddie Robinson collected 15 points and Rick Brunson added 10 and 10 assists for Chicago. "You know, we have rotations built in our system," Fizer said. "I guess (Bulls coach Bill Cartwright) took awhile to get around to me tonight. But when the guys get me the ball in the paint like they did, it's easy. I feel I'm unstoppable." Marshall led the starters with 16 points to go along with 13 boards as the Bulls shot 53 percent (44-of-83) from the field, held a 44-41 rebounding edge and dished out 32 assists. "This is perhaps our best win of the year," Cartwright said. "Our guys somehow managed to be focused through the entire 48 minutes, which is amazing when you consider the magnitude of what transpired with Michael and the fans." Chicago trailed early in the second quarter before taking the lead for good with a 16-4 run. After Tyronn Lue's 12-footer gave the Wizards a 30-27 edge with 7:33 to go, Jalen Rose sank a free throw and Brunson scored on a drive for the tie. Robinson scored nine points in the burst, which his 20-footer capped with 2:49 left for a 43-34 cushion. The bulge grew as large as 11 in the third quarter before Chicago cut it to 74-71 with a 9-1 burst to end the period. It was with 6:27 left in the third that Jordan brought the crowd to its feet with a signature move reminiscent of the 1990s. Guarded by Trenton Hassell, Jordan slashed across the lane from right to left, left his feet and switched hands in the air when inside help came for a dazzling left-handed layup. Jordan tried to rally his team in the fourth. After Larry Hughes' layup sliced the deficit to 97-91 with 2:18 to go, Jordan drove the baseline for a layup and then hit a pair from the line. But Washington got no closer, missing four of its last five shots. "No excuses. I just didn't have anything going tonight," Jordan said. "I was out of sync all night. It was a bad game for me and the team was about the same." Stackhouse recorded 23 points and a season-high 10 assists and Christian Laettner chipped in with 21 points for the Wizards, who hit 41 percent (36-of-85) from the floor.
