Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- For three quarters, the New York Knicks engaged in a shootout with the Dallas Mavericks. In the final period, they were gunned down by Michael Finley and Nick Van Exel. Finley and Van Exel led a fourth-quarter flurry of 3-pointers as the Mavericks pulled away for a 101-90 victory over the Knicks, their first in New York in more than 12 years. Dirk Nowitzki had another fantastic game with 30 points and nine rebounds for the Mavericks, which snapped a 10-game losing streak at Madison Square Garden dating to November 6, 1990. "We set so many records as a team this first half (of the season) and this is another thing that we can dust off and get rid of," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. The Knicks came in as the best 3-point shooting team in the NBA and boasting a season-high three-game winning streak. With the Mavs playing for the second straight night and sharpshooting point guard Steve Nash suffering through an 0-of-9 performance, the Knicks had a chance for the upset. But New York made just 8-of-26 from the arc, while Dallas sank 9-of-23, including 5-of-7 in the pivotal fourth quarter. Finley and Van Exel made two apiece and Nowitzki sank one. "They are a scoring machine," Knicks guard Allan Houston said. "They have three or four guys that can really hurt you." A jumper by Adrian Griffin opened the fourth quarter and gave Dallas the lead for good at 76-74. On the next possession, Finley drilled a 3-pointer from the left corner as Kurt Thomas fouled Shawn Bradley. Bradley's free throw completed the rare four-point play. "They have a lot of great shooters out there and stretch the defense to get some wide open 3-point shots and create a lot of mismatches," Thomas said. After a basket by Shandon Anderson, Finley penetrated and found Van Exel for a 3-pointer and an 83-76 lead. After the Knicks inched within three points, Van Exel buried another 3-pointer that made it 86-80 and had the sellout crowd of 19,763 at Madison Square Garden groaning. "You can pretty much see it in their faces," said Van Exel, who made 5-of-9 from long range and scored 17 points. "It's coming from so many different people, which is very unexpected. Some teams have one or two shooters; this team, most times we go on the court, we have four or five shooters that can knock down threes, and that's a little discouraging to teams." Finley dribbled into the lane for a banker and found Bradley with a lob for an easy hoop before two free throws by Nash made it 92-80 with 6:35 remaining. Finley had 20 points and nine assists. "I thought we were really aggressive moving the ball and making shots, which we can do," Nelson said. The Knicks pulled within 92-86 with 4:29 left on a runner by Latrell Sprewell, who scored 21 points. Finley responded with a 3-pointer, and Nowitzki drove in the dagger with another 3-pointer on the next possession, making it 98-86 with 3:16 to go. "They kept staying the game the whole time," Nowitzki said. "Finally we put them away with three or four minutes to go." The Mavs improved to 34-8 overall and 15-6 on the road, both tops in the NBA. They are third in the league in 3-point shooting, although Nelson doesn't necessarily like playing that way. "I'd rather throw it inside to some big guy that can score, but I haven't found him yet," Nelson said. Griffin scored 11 points and fellow reserve Raef LaFrentz added nine for Dallas, which shot 44 percent (34-of-77) overall and held a 38-18 advantage in bench points. Thomas battled foul trouble to collect 17 points and 12 rebounds and Houston and Howard Eisley scored 14 points each for New York, which shot 42 percent (37-of-89) and held a 43-37 edge on the glass. "To have (Thomas) in foul trouble or to have him on the bench hurts us," Knicks coach Don Chaney said. Thomas sat down with two fouls in the first three minutes, but the Knicks built a 26-19 lead late in the opening quarter. That's when Van Exel first struck, ending the period with two 3-pointers that pulled the Mavs into a 29-29 tie. "I just had to pick it up for the team," Van Exel said. "I know when I'm playing aggressive basketball, making shots, creating opportunities for my teammates, we're a better team. Steve didn't have one of his better nights. I knew when I was in the game I sort of had to pick it up for him." Thomas returned to score 11 points in the second quarter, including seven in a 13-1 surge that gave New York a 53-44 lead late in the first half. Nowitzki scored eight points in the third period, including two free throws after being flagrantly fouled by Othella Harrington that pulled Dallas within 65-64 with 3:51 to play.
