Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- A return to Staples Center for a rematch with the Los Angeles Lakers was exactly what the New Jersey Nets needed to emerge from their recent funk. Kerry Kittles buried a critical 3-pointer and Kenyon Martin had six of his 18 points in the final quarter as the Nets edged the Lakers, 89-83. Jason Kidd had 11 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for New Jersey, which ended a three-game losing streak overall and a four-game slide on the road. The Nets also completed a season sweep of the Lakers, who swept New Jersey in the Finals last season. Relying on their balanced attack, the Nets made all the plays down the stretch. Kittles finished with 17 points and Richard Jefferson added 12 and eight rebounds as six New Jersey players scored in double figures. "I had reservations about our state of mind," said Nets coach and former Laker Byron Scott. "I never have reservations about our team. I know we got some great guys and I know they have the type of will to come back when you have a devastating loss." "I have said all along this team has persevered through so much, when chips are down we somehow gather the momentum and really play together as a unit and find a way. Tonight, we found a way." Shaquille O'Neal led Los Angeles with 27 points and 13 rebounds but missed eight of 13 free throws, including 2-of-6 in the final two minutes. The Lakers have lost three of their last four and are 19-23 on the season. After 42 games last season, Los Angeles was 30-12. "The Lakers are not what they were last year right now," Kittles said. "But it is just big for us to get a victory on the road on the West Coast trip." O'Neal's free throw with 47 seconds left gave Los Angeles an 83-82 lead but Kidd found Kittles for a 3-pointer eight seconds later. Martin fouled O'Neal in the paint, but the Lakers' center missed both free throws. Kidd ran the clock down on the Nets next possession and found Martin, who was fouled going to the hoop. Martin made both shots for an 87-83 edge and Robert Horry missed at the other end for Los Angeles. Kidd ran down the rebound and fed Martin for a dunk that put the game out of reach. "We needed this win just like we needed the other ones," Martin said. "We got stops when we needed it at the end of the of the game unlike previous games on this trip." "Unfortunately we couldn't come down the stretch and win that ballgame," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "We had all the opportunities to win it and couldn't do it. New Jersey held a 23-19 lead after a very tight first quarter and pushed its lead to 29-22 following a turnaround jumper by Jefferson with 9:39 left in the first half. The Nets' lead was 31-24 when a dunk by Devean George ignited a quarter-closing 16-6 burst. Derek Fisher had eight points in the second quarter and 14 in the opening half. The game was tied, 50-50, with 5:16 left in the third quarter when Los Angeles used a 10-2 burst to take control. O'Neal had six points in the spurt, which was capped by a Fisher layup with 2:19 remaining in the quarter. New Jersey led by five on two occasions, including 80-75 with 3:36 left. But Kobe Bryant had a jumper and Rick Fox a layup to get Los Angeles within a point. Martin hit a 20-footer for the Nets, but O'Neal had a free throw and dunk to knot the contest. Bryant had a season-low 11 points but made just 4-of-14 shots. Los Angeles, which shot just 40.5 percent (34-of-84) from the field, was 6-of-21 from 3-point range. "I'm just getting my rhythm back right now," said Bryant, who is battling knee tendinitis. "My knee felt pretty good actually, the best its felt in a long time." Fisher was a bright spot with 22 points, including a career-high 10 field goals made. Kidd made just 3-of-13 shots as New Jersey shot 44 percent (35-of-79), including 4-of-13 from 3-point range.
