Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- One night after beating the NBA's best team, the Atlanta Hawks snapped a 13-game road losing streak. Glenn Robinson scored six of his 27 points in overtime as the Hawks rallied for a 102-101 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Hawks improved to just 3-17 on the road, earning their first win away from home since beating the Los Angeles Lakers on November 12. It also was Atlanta's first road victory of the season against an Eastern Conference opponent and its first away from Philips Arena under interim coach Terry Stotts. "It's good to end our road losing streak," Robinson said. "We played better tonight. We had to get over the hump, get a lead and get out of here with a win." The Hawks came to Cleveland on a high after surprising Sacramento, 115-104. But they trailed by five points with two minutes left in regulation. "My biggest concern going into this game was the mental preparation," Stotts said. "There were a lot of factors going into this one. We had an emotional win over Sacramento, then the travel and playing Cleveland, who had three days off and the coaching change." The Cavaliers were unable to close out the game, suffering their sixth straight loss and dropping to 0-2 under interim coach Keith Smart. Robinson's 3-pointer made it 93-91 with 1:53 left. Following a series of turnovers and misses, Shareef Abdur-Raheem hit a short jumper in the lane with 12 seconds left to force overtime. Abdur-Raheem finished with 25 points and also grabbed 12 rebounds. "We played close," Smart said. "Rahim made a big play down the stretch and Glenn Robinson made some big plays, but those two have been making big plays for their entire careers." The Hawks never trailed in the extra period as Robinson's reverse layup made it 95-93 with 3:59 to go. "Our team is still growing with me," Smart added. "I think, more than anything, we did a great job with defense and pressure. Our rotations were just perfect." Zydrunus Ilgauskas scored 19 points and Smush Parker added 17 for Cleveland. Parker nailed two 3-pointers in overtime, the second of which brought the Cavaliers within 100-99 with 57 seconds to play. After Robinson made a pair from the line with 42 seconds to left, Cleveland again pulled within a point on rookie Dajuan Wagner's foul shot with 28 seconds left. The Cavaliers elected not to foul and Jason Terry missed a 3-pointer as the shot clock wound down, but Cleveland's Ricky Davis made a critical mental error in the final seconds. Instead of calling timeout after grabbing the rebound, Davis dribbled up court. He finally called a timeout with 1.3 seconds left, but the Cavaliers were forced to inbounds in the backcourt and Davis' desperation jumper from 40 feet fell short at the buzzer. "There was a little confusion," Smart said. "He came down and it was in his mind to call a timeout, but at the last moment, I think he said, 'Maybe I need to get up the floor.'" Neither team led by more than seven in a contest that featured 17 ties and 10 lead changes. Robinson came alive in the second half after being held to just eight points over the first 24 minutes. "I was glad the way he bounced back tonight," Stotts said. "He had so many good looks in the first half when he was so open and sometimes he's better when he has a guy in his face." Terry, who scored 13 points and handed out 12 assists, strained his hip flexor late in the third quarter. He expects to be ready for the Hawks' next game on Tuesday. "I was on a dummy (spare) tire," said Terry, who played 43 minutes. "You can only go 45 on a dummy tire." Davis contributed 16 points for the Cavaliers, who dropped to 0-4 in overtime games this season. Atlanta improved to 3-1.
